How to Get to Alicante
Travelling to Alicante is easy, with several convenient options available.
By Plane
Flying is by far the quickest and easiest way to reach Alicante. Alicante–Elche Airport (ALC) offers direct flights from many major European cities.
From France, you can fly direct from:

- Lyon
- Nice
- Toulouse
Low-cost airlines such as Ryanair, Vueling and easyJet operate frequent services, making Alicante an affordable destination throughout much of the year.
Once you arrive, the city centre is only 15–20 minutes by taxi or around 40 minutes by bus.
By Train
Travelling by train is also possible, although it requires a connection.
A typical journey is:

- Barcelona to Alicante: approximately 4 hours on Spain’s high-speed AVE train.
By Car

From southern France, the journey typically takes 7 to 9 hours, depending on your departure point. The A-7 motorway follows much of Spain’s Mediterranean coastline before reaching Alicante.

The Monte Tossal Trail starts near San Fernando Castle and loops around the hill. Much less visited than Santa Bárbara Castle, this fortress was built in the 19th century to defend Alicante but was never actually used in battle. Today, its weathered ramparts provide a peaceful setting with panoramic views over the city’s rooftops, the Mediterranean and Santa Bárbara Castle in the distance. It’s a wonderful spot for a sunset picnic or simply to enjoy the scenery together.
he trail is clearly marked, relatively flat and lined with pine trees, agaves and cypress trees, with several benches where you can stop and admire the view.
Allow around 45 minutes to one hour to complete the walk at a leisurely pace. The atmosphere is calm and feels surprisingly removed from the busy tourist areas. As there are no cafés or facilities along the route, remember to bring some water and perhaps a small picnic.

Santa Bárbara Castle
If there’s one place not to miss for sunset, it’s undoubtedly Santa Bárbara Castle.
You can either take the elevator or enjoy the fifteen-minute walk to the summit. Allow one to two hours if you also plan to explore the fortress itself before sunset.
