When to Visit Barcelona for a Romantic Getaway
The best time for a romantic weekend in Barcelona is during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). These seasons offer pleasant weather, comfortable temperatures and fewer tourists, allowing you to enjoy romantic walks and the city’s iconic attractions without the summer crowds
Winter (December to February) is also a lovely option, with a quieter atmosphere, magical Christmas lights in December and cosy evenings in intimate restaurants.
We strongly recommend avoiding summer (June to August). Although the weather is sunny and the city is buzzing with energy, Barcelona becomes extremely crowded and often very hot, making it harder to enjoy a peaceful and romantic escape.

Barcelona is exceptionally well connected and easy to reach from across Europe and beyond.
By Plane
Barcelona–El Prat Airport (BCN) is the city’s main international airport, located just 15 km (9 miles) from the city centre.
There are several ways to reach downtown Barcelona:
- Aerobús: fast and convenient (around 35 minutes to Plaça de Catalunya).
- Rodalies R2 Nord train: the most affordable option, connecting the airport with Passeig de Gràcia.
- Taxi or ride-hailing services: comfortable but more expensive (around €30–35).
By Train
High-speed trains, including TGV INOUI and AVE, connect Barcelona with several major European cities:
- Paris – around 6 hours 30 minutes
- Lyon – around 5 hours
- Marseille – around 4 hours 30 minutes
- Madrid – around 3 hours
Barcelona Sants is the city’s main railway station.
By Car
From France, the AP-7 motorway connects Barcelona with Perpignan, Montpellier and many other destinations. Be aware of motorway tolls and low-emission traffic restrictions in the city centre.
By Bus
Companies such as FlixBus, Alsa and BlaBlaCar Bus operate affordable services from many European cities.
If you’re travelling from southern France, the coach is an excellent option, as it drops you close to the city centre with easy access to the metro and bus network.
Once you’re in Barcelona, getting around is simple thanks to the city’s efficient public transport system, including the metro, buses and trams.

Parc Güell

However, while Park Güell is undeniably iconic, it’s more of an architectural masterpiece than a true park where you can simply relax in nature. It also becomes extremely busy during the high season, which can take away some of the romantic atmosphere.
Montjuïc, on the other hand, offers lush gardens, breathtaking viewpoints, a historic castle and even plenty of peaceful spots for a sunset picnic.
If we had to recommend just one green space in Barcelona, Montjuïc would be our clear winner.
Ciutadella Park
Located close to El Born, Ciutadella Park is a peaceful oasis in the heart of Barcelona.
One of its most romantic activities is renting a rowing boat and gliding across the small lake together.
Boats are available daily from around 10 a.m. until dusk, with prices ranging from approximately €7 to €11 for 30 minutes, depending on the number of passengers.
The atmosphere feels wonderfully nostalgic and almost cinematic, especially in spring. The park is also perfect for a romantic picnic thanks to its shaded lawns, magnificent fountain and relaxed atmosphere.
Afterwards, continue your walk towards the Parliament of Catalonia, a fascinating yet often overlooked historic building. Free guided tours lasting around 45 to 60 minutes are available on selected days.
Combining a boat ride with a visit to the Parliament makes for a wonderful half-day romantic escape.
