Melker Stiftskeller
Melker Stiftskeller is one of Vienna’s most unusual and historic restaurants, with origins dating back to around 1430. It originally belonged to Melk Abbey, which used the building to store wine and cabbages sold in the city. In 1629, the abbey received permission to serve food alongside its own Wachau wines. The building was destroyed in 1729, rebuilt shortly afterwards, and has operated as a restaurant since the 20th century.
The restaurant is quite spacious, but for the most romantic atmosphere it’s best to arrive early. Once it gets busy, it can become rather lively. If you come when it opens at 5:00 pm, you’ll have a good chance of securing one of the cosy alcoves, perfect for a quiet candlelit dinner.
You might think that’s an early dinner, but if you’ve booked tickets for a performance at the famous Vienna State Opera, located just a 10 to 15-minute walk away, it’s actually ideal. Enjoy dinner together before heading to the opera, where performances often begin around 7:30 pm
