When is the best time for a romantic getaway to Gozo?

Couple en balade Gozo

The best time for a romantic getaway to Gozo is generally during spring (March to May) or autumn (September to November). During these seasons, temperatures are pleasant, tourist attractions are less crowded, and you can enjoy the island’s natural beauty without the intense summer heat.

In spring, you’ll appreciate the blooming vegetation and the fresh air, while autumn brings mild temperatures and beautiful natural colours. These seasons provide the perfect setting for romantic walks, discovering secluded beaches, and visiting historical sites without being disturbed by large crowds.

However, if you prefer warmer weather to enjoy the beaches, summer (June to August) is also an option, although tourist sites are much busier—often even crowded during this period. Be sure to check the weather forecast and local events when planning your romantic getaway to Gozo.

How do you get to Gozo from Malta Airport?

You no longer need to travel via Valletta to reach the Cirkewwa Ferry Terminal before boarding for Gozo.

The X1 bus takes you directly from the airport, making the journey very convenient. Once in Cirkewwa, board a ferry that will take you directly to Mgarr Harbour in Gozo in around 25 minutes.

Another option is to take the X4 bus to Valletta, then board the fast ferry from Valletta Harbour, which reaches Mgarr in Gozo in approximately 45 minutes.

From Mgarr to your final destination in Gozo

From Mgarr, Gozo’s main harbour, you can take a local bus directly after leaving the ferry, catch a taxi, or hire a car to reach your final destination on the island.

Be sure to check bus and ferry timetables, as they may vary depending on the season and the day of the week. If you’d like greater flexibility, consider hiring a car in Malta and taking it across on the ferry to Gozo.

Discover Victoria by night

Victoria by night

Victoria takes on a unique and charming atmosphere after dark. The illuminated walls of the Citadel are truly magical, especially outside the peak season when there are hardly any visitors.

Independence Square comes alive with night markets and cultural events during the season.

St George’s Basilica is beautifully illuminated, showcasing its remarkable architecture. Republic Street, the city’s main thoroughfare, is pleasantly lit and lined with shops and cafés waiting to be explored.

The San Anton Gardens take on a romantic atmosphere thanks to their subtle lighting. Pjazza San Gorg, a picturesque square, is surrounded by lively cafés.

Explore these places to enjoy the peaceful beauty of Victoria at night and discover a completely different side of the illuminated city.

Immerse yourselves in the serenity of Dwejra

Head to the west coast of Gozo to discover Dwejra, a peaceful and romantic coastal site.

Although the Azure Window, the natural limestone arch carved by the sea, collapsed in 2017, the area remains a magnificent place to explore, with the Inland Sea and many other remarkable natural attractions.

Enjoy a hand-in-hand walk along the rugged cliffs and soak up the breathtaking scenery, whether during the day or at sunset…

Relax on the island's beaches

Wherever you go in Gozo, never leave without your swimsuit and a small towel. The island is home to both well-known beaches and more secluded coves, perfect for a romantic day in the sun, starting with Dwejra.

Ramla Bay, with its distinctive red sand, provides a picturesque setting for a peaceful escape outside the high season. It’s the perfect place for a romantic sunset stroll or simply to relax with your feet in the water. The privacy offered by these secluded beaches guarantees precious moments together.

Find a quiet spot, spread out your towel and enjoy a peaceful moment together in complete privacy.

Although Ramla Bay is the island’s best-known beach, Gozo is also home to several more secret and secluded beaches. Explore San Blas Bay, reached via a short walk, for an even more intimate atmosphere. Couples can also head to Hondoq Bay, renowned for its crystal-clear waters and peaceful surroundings.

Since Gozo is an island, go exploring and find YOUR own little hidden paradise!

Explore caves and megalithic temples

Ggantija temples

Gozo is much more than beaches and citadels. Explore Calypso’s Cave and Ninu’s Cave together, natural sanctuaries that evoke a mysterious sense of intimacy.

For a journey back in time, visit the Ġgantija Temples, among the oldest freestanding monuments in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. These ancient temples stand as witnesses to a time when love was already being celebrated.

Discover the island of Comino and its lagoons

Take a boat trip to the neighbouring island of Comino. Explore the famous Blue Lagoon and relax on its beautiful beaches.

Very easy to reach, simply travel from Victoria to Mgarr Harbour and purchase your ticket from one of the ferry companies operating there.

Be sure to check the return timetables carefully. Some departures are reserved exclusively for passengers holding tickets that include the lagoon and cave excursions, rather than a standard return ferry ticket.

Depending on the season, you can enjoy either the famous Blue Lagoon or the lesser-known Crystal Lagoon a little further away. During the summer months, we recommend visiting in the morning before the crowds arrive.

You can also explore the island’s walking trails, which take around two to three hours to complete.

Try activities designed for couples

Gozo offers a wide variety of activities for couples looking for romance. Go cycling through the island’s rolling landscapes, dive together into its crystal-clear waters for an unforgettable underwater experience, enjoy a wine tasting at one of Gozo’s wineries, or book a sunset cruise for a magical evening together.

If you’re looking for a little adventure, why not choose a kayaking excursion around the island, combining exploration with outdoor activity? You can even combine Gozo and the small island of Comino on a kayaking trip. The stunning coastline and beautiful seascapes add an extra romantic touch to the experience.

Surprise your partner with a deluxe romantic picnic!

Why not surprise your loved one with an extraordinary picnic in a location you choose—or in a secret, exceptionally romantic spot carefully selected just for you?

You’ll enjoy a delicious meal prepared with fresh local ingredients, perfectly balanced and adapted to any food intolerances or allergies. Everything is prepared and organised for you. It’s guaranteed to be an unforgettable romantic experience.

Discover a rather unusual activity!

Promenade Alpacas

Try it once and you’ll love it 🙂 Trust us! This small-group activity is just as enjoyable for couples as it is for families.

Meet this lovely family of alpacas in the village of Xewkija, just south-east of Victoria. There’s even a bus stop nearby.

You’ll get to know these gentle animals while taking them for a walk (no, you don’t ride them…) and you’ll also be able to feed them and visit the small farm, where you’ll meet some impressively large turkeys.

Combine this activity with a visit to the village of Xewkija and its enormous, spectacular rotunda.

Discover hidden treasures

Beyond its famous attractions, Gozo is full of hidden gems. For example, discover the lesser-known Wied il-Mielaħ natural arch in the north of the island. Overshadowed for years by the famous Azure Window, which collapsed in 2017, it offers breathtaking views over the sea.

Wied il-Mielaħ

Don’t stop at Victoria. Explore the picturesque villages of Għarb (pronounced “Arb”) with its magnificent Ta’ Pinu Basilica, Xewkija (pronounced “shoo-kee-ya”), and Marsalforn, and discover the island’s lesser-known charms.

To make the most of the island in just one day, consider buying tickets for the Hop-On Hop-Off bus, which serves many of Gozo’s main attractions while providing interesting information about each of them along the way.

For a romantic adventure, take the hiking trails in the south of the island between Xlendi and Mgarr. For example, you can walk from Xlendi to the Ta’ Ċenċ Cliffs if you don’t want a hike that’s too long, then continue up to Ta’ Sannat.

These trails lead you through breathtaking scenery, perfect for sharing special moments together. Let Gozo’s unspoilt nature guide you and enjoy moments of pure happiness.

Enjoy a tasting of Gozitan wines

End your day with a tasting of local wines at one of Gozo’s wineries, accompanied by a platter of traditional Gozitan specialities.

In terms of timing, allow at least two hours, and often longer, as you’ll most likely want to linger and enjoy both the experience and the atmosphere.

Don’t stop at the capital, Victoria. Explore the picturesque villages of Għarb (pronounced “Arb”) with its magnificent Ta’ Pinu Basilica, Xewkija (pronounced “shoo-kee-ya”) with its enormous rotunda, and Marsalforn, and discover the island’s hidden charms.
