When is the best time to visit Zagreb for a romantic getaway?
For a romantic weekend in Zagreb, the best times to visit are spring, from April to June, and autumn, from September to October.
Spring (April to June)
Temperatures are mild, ranging from 15 to 25°C, making this the perfect season for walks around the city or through its parks. Zagreb’s parks and gardens, such as Zrinjevac Park and the Botanical Garden, are in full bloom, creating a romantic setting. This period is rich in festivals and cultural events, offering a lively atmosphere without the summer crowds.
Autumn (September to October)
The golden and red colours of the leaves give Zagreb a special charm, particularly in its historic districts and green spaces. Temperatures remain pleasant, generally ranging from 10 to 20°C, making it comfortable to explore the city.
Autumn attracts fewer visitors than summer, allowing you to enjoy the tourist attractions and restaurants in a more intimate atmosphere.
Summer (July to August)
Although summer is a lively season with numerous events, temperatures can be very high and the city may be busier. However, summer evenings in Zagreb are delightful, with open air concerts and bustling terraces.
Winter (December to February)
Zagreb is magical in winter, particularly during the Christmas season, with its Christmas markets and festive decorations. However, temperatures are colder and outdoor activities may be more limited.
In short, spring and autumn offer the best combination of weather, atmosphere and visitor numbers for a romantic weekend in Zagreb, allowing you to make the most of everything the city has to offer.
How to travel to Zagreb from France
Flying is the quickest and most convenient way to reach Zagreb from France.
Several airlines, including Air France, Croatia Airlines and Ryanair, offer direct flights from Paris Charles de Gaulle or Orly Airport to Zagreb Franjo Tuđman Airport. The flight takes approximately two hours.
If you are travelling from another French city, such as Lyon, Marseille, Nice or Bordeaux, you will find connecting flights through European hubs including Munich, Vienna and Frankfurt. The total journey time, including the connection, can vary between four and six hours.
Once you arrive, you can reach the city centre by taxi, direct shuttle bus or hire car. The journey takes approximately 30 minutes.
Which cosy and romantic area should you choose in Zagreb?
For a romantic weekend in Zagreb, the Upper Town (Gornji Grad) is an ideal choice. You will be surrounded by iconic landmarks such as St Mark’s Church, Lotrščak Tower and the Stone Gate. Its intimate atmosphere and charming little squares make it a perfect place to stroll hand in hand.
The Lower Town (Donji Grad) is another excellent option. This district is more modern but equally charming, with its wide avenues, elegant parks such as Zrinjevac, and numerous cafés and restaurants. It is ideal for couples looking for a mixture of culture, shopping and relaxation in leafy surroundings. You will also be close to many museums, art galleries and the bustling Dolac Market.
For a quieter and greener experience, the residential district of Maksimir is a wonderful choice. Located east of the city centre, this neighbourhood is famous for Maksimir Park, a vast and peaceful haven. It is perfect for nature loving couples, with romantic walks, picturesque lakes and gardens.
Finally, if you are looking for a combination of luxury and tranquillity, consider the Pantovčak district. This affluent neighbourhood is located on the hills west of the Upper Town and offers magnificent views across the city. Its elegant villas and tree lined streets create an exclusive atmosphere, ideal for a romantic escape.
What can you see and do during a romantic weekend in Zagreb?
Zagreb is the perfect destination for a romantic weekend. The city combines historic charm, vibrant culture and intimate moments. Like the capital of the Grand Duchy and several other European cities, Zagreb is divided into an Upper Town, known as Gradec, and the historic district of Kaptol.
Kaptol
Kaptol is one of Zagreb’s oldest districts and is dominated by the majestic Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. At night, the cathedral’s spires are beautifully illuminated, creating an impressive silhouette against the night sky. During your guided tour, you will have an opportunity to explore the area surrounding the cathedral, where a peaceful atmosphere is punctuated by the sound of bells and the whisper of wind through the trees.
The streets around Kaptol are steeped in history, and your guide can share legends and anecdotes connected with this district, once the centre of Zagreb’s religious power. Its narrow streets and historic buildings give the area a unique charm, enhanced by the soft glow of the streetlights.
Do not miss Ban Jelačić Square and the majestic Zagreb Cathedral, whose spires dominate the skyline, before immersing yourselves in the lively atmosphere of the nearby Dolac Market, where colourful stalls overflow with fresh local produce. Stroll along Tkalčićeva Street, a charming cobbled street lined with cafés and shops, before making your way to Flower Square (Cvjetni trg), a popular meeting place where locals come to relax and socialise.
Gradec
On the other side of the Medveščak stream lies Gradec, also known as Gornji Grad, the Upper Town. This district is characterised by its cobbled streets, historic buildings and panoramic views across the city. During an evening guided tour, you can explore iconic landmarks such as the Stone Gate (Kamenita Vrata), home to a small chapel, and St Mark’s Church, with its colourful tiled roof, which takes on an almost magical appearance beneath the night lights.
Gradec also offers spectacular views over Zagreb, particularly from the viewpoints surrounding Lotrščak Tower. These locations are perfect for taking photographs or simply admiring the illuminated city. Your guide can show you the most picturesque spots while sharing stories about Gradec, which was once a fortified town separate from Kaptol.
Savour Zagreb’s cuisine
Zagreb’s gastronomy is a delicious reflection of Croatian culinary traditions, combining local and international influences to create a rich and diverse cuisine. As the country’s capital, Zagreb offers a vast selection of options ranging from traditional dishes to modern creations, and no stay in the city would be complete without exploring its culinary scene.
Dolac Market
Located in the heart of the city, Dolac Market is the centre of Zagreb’s culinary life. Known as the “belly of Zagreb”, this open air market is the largest in the city and an essential destination for anyone who loves fresh produce. Every morning, its colourful stalls fill with seasonal fruit and vegetables, meat, fish, cheese and other local products. Residents come here for their daily shopping, while visitors can soak up the vibrant atmosphere and discover the ingredients used in Croatian cooking. Downstairs, the covered market offers a wide selection of meat, cured meats and dairy products, while the outdoor stalls are mainly occupied by local market gardeners, florists and beekeepers.
Discover the local specialities
Among the traditional dishes you will find in Zagreb, štrukli is undoubtedly one of the most iconic. Originating in the Zagorje region, this dish consists of rolls of pastry filled with fresh cheese, either baked or boiled and served with cream. Every family has its own recipe, and štrukli can be enjoyed in several sweet or savoury variations.
Another unmissable speciality, purica s mlincima, is a classic Croatian celebration dish. It consists of roast turkey served with mlinci, a type of thin flatbread softened in the meat juices. This traditional dish is particularly popular at family meals, especially during Christmas celebrations.
Meat lovers should not miss ćevapi, small rolls of grilled minced meat often served with pita bread, raw onions and ajvar, a red pepper sauce. Although originally from Bosnia, this dish is widely enjoyed throughout Croatia and is a genuine treat for the taste buds.
Zagreb is also famous for špek fileki, a local Croatian version of tripe prepared with bacon, onions, garlic and spices. This rustic speciality is part of the city’s traditional cuisine and is particularly appreciated by those who enjoy strong flavours.
Beer lovers should head to Medvedgrad Brewery Pub on Ilica Street, Zagreb’s first craft brewery.
Pastries also occupy an important place in Zagreb’s cuisine, with desserts such as kremšnita, a type of custard cream slice, and orehnjača, a walnut roll that is particularly popular during celebrations.
Zagreb’s gastronomy is not limited to traditional dishes. The city is experiencing a genuine culinary renaissance, with numerous chefs exploring modern and innovative recipes inspired by local ingredients. Whether you dine in a small bistro, an upmarket restaurant or a traditional café, every meal in Zagreb is an invitation to discover the richness and diversity of Croatian cuisine.

These parks offer a variety of settings, but all are perfect for creating unforgettable memories during your romantic weekend in Zagreb.
Attend a performance at the Opera House
The Croatian National Theatre, also known as Hrvatsko narodno kazalište or HNK, is one of Zagreb’s architectural and cultural treasures. Inaugurated in 1895 by Emperor Franz Joseph I, the building is a magnificent example of Neo Baroque architecture and stands on one of the city’s central squares.
While the opera houses of Vienna, Budapest and Prague are renowned for their splendour and international reputations, Zagreb’s HNK stands out for its unique charm and central role in Croatian cultural life.
It stages opera, ballet and theatre performances. It is known for its rich programme, combining international classics with local Croatian productions and offering audiences an outstanding cultural experience. The grandeur of its auditorium, with its gilding, ornate balconies and magnificent chandelier, creates a sophisticated atmosphere that is perfect for an elegant evening.
Visit a few museums!
Zagreb has a rich museum scene, and some of its museums are particularly well suited to a romantic visit.
Museum of Broken Relationships
This unique museum is undoubtedly one of the most romantic in Zagreb, even though it explores the theme of lost love. Its collection features objects connected with past relationships, each accompanied by a personal story. The experience is both moving and introspective and can strengthen a couple’s bond by encouraging them to reflect on the complex nature of love.
Muzej 80-ih
Zagreb is home to a museum dedicated to the 1980s, known as Muzej 80-ih, or the Zagreb 80s Museum. It offers a nostalgic journey through the culture, music, fashion and everyday life of the 1980s in the former Yugoslavia and around the world.
The museum is designed as an interactive experience, with iconic objects from the decade including retro video games, vintage electronic devices, posters, vinyl records and period clothing. Explore Zagreb at sunset
Zagreb offers magnificent sunsets that can be enjoyed from several locations, including the city’s elevated viewpoints and the banks of the Sava River. The sky often fills with warm, vibrant colours, creating a peaceful and captivating atmosphere. If you are looking for a particular place from which to admire the sunset, the hills surrounding Zagreb, including Mount Medvednica, offer spectacular views of the city and the surrounding area.
For an outstanding panoramic view of Zagreb at night, climb Lotrščak Tower.
Experience the magic of Zagreb at night
Zagreb has an intimate and welcoming atmosphere at night, with less noise and traffic than during the day. Its cafés and bars come to life, and you can stop for a coffee or a glass of Croatian wine to prolong your evening. The streets take on an almost cinematic quality, with light and shadow enhancing the city’s beauty.
Every evening, shortly before twilight, the Upper Town becomes the setting for a remarkable ritual.
A lamplighter, known locally as a gasioc, walks through the streets of the Upper Town to light the 214 gas lanterns dotted around the district. Carrying a long pole with a flame at its tip, he lights every lantern individually, continuing a tradition that dates back more than 150 years. At dawn, he returns to extinguish them one by one. This daily ceremony gives Zagreb a romantic, timeless and almost magical atmosphere, particularly during evening walks.
This practice has become rare, as most cities that once used gas lanterns have modernised their public lighting and replaced them with electric alternatives. Zagreb, however, has preserved the tradition, partly to maintain the authenticity and charm of its old town and partly to preserve a tangible connection with its history. A guided evening tour of Kaptol and Gradec is therefore a fascinating experience, allowing you to discover a quieter and more enchanting side of Zagreb while listening to captivating stories about its past.
