Florence, a museum city and the Renaissance jewel of Tuscany

Treat yourselves and travel more often!

Florence, the pearl of the Italian Renaissance, is an enchanting destination and a true open-air museum, perfect for a romantic getaway in Italy.

Florence

Located in the heart of Tuscany, of which it is the capital, Florence is filled with palaces. Some, such as Palazzo Pitti and Palazzo Vecchio, can be visited, while others have been transformed into beautiful hotels where you can stay.

In the heart of this historic city, every medieval street and artistic treasure immerses you in a unique atmosphere. To plan a romantic weekend in Florence, follow this detailed itinerary through the maze of one of Italy’s most iconic cities, filled with medieval lanes, artistic masterpieces and culinary delights.

When is the best time for a romantic weekend in Florence?

The best time for a romantic weekend in Florence depends on your preferences regarding the weather, visitor numbers and special events. Here are a few things to consider when planning your romantic getaway.

Spring, from April to June

  • Temperatures are mild and pleasant, creating ideal conditions for romantic walks.
  • Florence’s gardens, including the Boboli Gardens, are in full bloom, adding colour and romance to the city.
  • Florence is less crowded than during the summer, allowing you to explore more peacefully.

Autumn, from September to October

  • Temperatures remain pleasant, while the warm, rich colours of autumn create a particularly romantic atmosphere.
  • Visitor numbers fall after the summer, making it easier to enjoy Florence’s main attractions without the peak-season crowds.

Summer, from July to August

  • This is the busiest tourist season, but it can be appealing if you enjoy a lively summer atmosphere.
  • Numerous festivals, outdoor events and concerts take place during the summer, offering an enriching cultural experience.

Winter, from November to February

  • Temperatures can be cooler, but Florence retains all its charm during winter.
  • Tourist attractions are less crowded, offering a more intimate experience, although some may have reduced opening hours.

Spring and autumn are generally considered the best seasons for a romantic weekend in Florence because of the pleasant weather and smaller crowds. However, summer festivals and Florence’s winter charm can also make for a memorable getaway.

How do you get to Florence from the airport?

When you land at Florence Peretola Airport, the excitement of your romantic getaway can begin straight away. Several transport options connect this small, easy-to-navigate airport with the city centre.

Aéroport Florence

The T2 tram line is generally the simplest option. It connects the airport with central Florence and Santa Maria Novella railway station. Taxis are also available outside the terminal.

Although hiring a car offers greater flexibility if you are planning to explore the Tuscan countryside, it is genuinely unnecessary for visiting Florence itself. The historic centre is compact and can easily be explored on foot.

Florence is also only around 40 minutes from Bologna by high-speed train. Bologna Airport offers a wider range of international connections, making it a useful alternative and giving you the opportunity to combine Bologna with Florence, the jewel of the Renaissance, during the same romantic trip.

Pisa is approximately one hour from Florence by train. A simple weekend can therefore easily turn into a longer Italian escape combining Florence, Bologna and Pisa.

Choose an intimate place to stay in Florence

Florence is filled with charming accommodation, ranging from historic hotels and picturesque guesthouses to the many Florentine palazzi that have been converted into hotels.

Immerse yourselves in the atmosphere of the Renaissance by staying in a 15th-century palazzo, or choose an intimate riverside retreat for a more contemporary experience. The important thing is to find a romantic setting that will make your stay unforgettable.

What can couples do and see during a romantic weekend in Florence?

Choose a private guided tour

Kisses, cuddles and mischievous glances are all part of the plan. But if you are visiting Florence, you will probably want to explore at least some of its exceptional heritage too. Treat yourselves to a private guided tour of Florence in French, during which you will be alone with your guide and free to ask as many questions as you like.

You can choose a guided tour of the historic centre, the Duomo complex and its enormous dome, or one of Florence’s most important museums, such as the Uffizi Gallery, the Accademia Gallery or the Bargello Museum.

We have created three different private guided tours. The first explores the right bank and introduces you to the intrigues of the Medici family, Dante Alighieri and many other fascinating stories. The second takes you to the very different left bank, with its churches, winding medieval lanes and panoramic views. This side of Florence is less touristy and often feels more authentic. Finally, our evening tour allows you to admire Florence at night, when its monuments, streets and historic buildings are beautifully illuminated.

If you would prefer a personalised tour, simply let us know what you would like to see.

Shooting photo en amoureux à Florence

Love, romance and unforgettable memories in some of Florence’s most beautiful locations. Join a professional photographer who will capture your time together and create unique photographs of your romantic getaway.

Climb and explore the Duomo

Duomo à Florence

Florence Cathedral, Santa Maria del Fiore, was the city’s first major basilica. Its iconic dome is an architectural wonder to explore hand in hand. Climb to the top of the dome for panoramic views over Florence and memories you will never forget.

Walk across Ponte Vecchio

Ponte Vecchio Florence

Did you know that Ponte Vecchio is now one of Florence’s most popular places for marriage proposals? This was not always the case. In the past, the shops on Ponte Vecchio were occupied by butchers.

Much like Tower Bridge in London, which never seems to lose its appeal, a walk across Ponte Vecchio transports you to another era. Lined with goldsmiths’ and jewellers’ shops, this medieval bridge offers picturesque views over the Arno at sunset and a magical atmosphere that is perfect for couples.

For beautiful photographs with Ponte Vecchio in the background, stand on the nearby Ponte Santa Trinita.

Explore the Uffizi Gallery

Galerie des Offices

Your romantic trip to Florence will reach artistic heights when you explore the Uffizi Gallery, a place where the art of the Renaissance resonates with timeless passion.

Housed in a majestic building designed by Giorgio Vasari, the gallery is much more than a collection of works of art. It is a journey through history and an encounter with the extraordinary creativity of masters such as Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and Botticelli.

Take a barchetto cruise

Balade en barchetto traditionnel

Florence may not be Venice, but a barchetto cruise on the Arno is another activity that is sure to bring you closer together. The small cruise lasts approximately 45 minutes and allows you to admire Venice… Oops, Florence, from an entirely different perspective.

Take a horse-drawn carriage ride with a fiaccheraio

Horse-drawn carriage rides can now be found in many cities, particularly former imperial capitals such as Vienna and Prague. Florence has its own traditional carriages, driven by licensed coachmen known as fiaccherai.

You can take a short tour of the city in a traditional carriage driven by a fiaccheraio. The carriages are usually found near the Duomo or Piazza della Signoria.

For an even more luxurious experience, you can book a carriage ride through the Tuscan hills, accompanied by lunch and a Chianti wine tasting. It is a wonderful option for a truly special day together.

Stroll through the Boboli Gardens

Jardins Boboli

The Boboli Gardens are magnificent Italian-style gardens located behind Palazzo Pitti. Their green avenues provide a peaceful refuge from the lively city, while their elegant layout, sculptures and majestic fountains create an idyllic setting for a romantic walk.

You could even bring something to eat and enjoy a small picnic together.

Come together over Tuscan cuisine

Discovering Florence is not limited to exploring its rich artistic heritage. It also means tasting the Tuscan specialities that form an essential part of the city’s identity.

For an unforgettable experience, step inside one of Florence’s local trattorias, where authentic Tuscan cuisine is served in all its generous simplicity.

Table restaurant romantique Florence

With their welcoming interiors and outdoor terraces, Florence’s trattorias provide an ideal setting for an intimate candlelit meal. Cobbled streets and historic façades create a romantic backdrop, while attentive service and soft music complete the experience.

Begin your culinary adventure with ribollita, one of Tuscany’s most emblematic dishes. This hearty, comforting soup is prepared with seasonal vegetables, beans and bread. It captures the very essence of Tuscan cooking: simple, generous and delicious.

Gastronomie Florence

Then try bistecca alla fiorentina. This thick, juicy cut of beef, traditionally seasoned simply with salt and pepper, reflects the Tuscan passion for excellent ingredients and authentic flavours. Sharing it with your partner adds a sociable dimension to the meal.

Accompany your dinner with a glass of Chianti, the region’s iconic wine. Produced in the Tuscan hills, this robust red wine perfectly complements the rich flavours of the local cuisine. Share a glass with the person you love and allow its complex aromas and fruity notes to add a touch of sophistication to your romantic dinner.

Admire the sunset

We recommend three particularly beautiful places from which to watch the sunset during your stay in Florence.

The path leading to the Basilica of San Miniato al Monte, above Piazzale Michelangelo, is romantic in itself. You can walk there or take bus number 12. Once you reach the hill, take some time together to watch the sun set over Florence from Piazzale Michelangelo.

Coucher soleil Florence

Then continue uphill to the basilica, where there are usually fewer people. If you are lucky, the sound of the monks singing may even accompany your visit.

Another beautiful location is Fiesole, in the hills overlooking Florence. You can reach it by bus or, if you are feeling energetic, walk up through the surrounding countryside. Nearby, Villa San Michele occupies a former 15th-century monastery in a magnificent Renaissance setting overlooking Florence.

The journey beneath its arcades is beautiful, while the view of the setting sun from the gardens is particularly memorable.

Our third suggestion requires much less effort. Simply watch the sunset from Ponte Santa Trinita, with Ponte Vecchio and the River Arno in front of you.

Explore Florence by night

Exploring Florence at night is an enchanting experience, with illuminated historic monuments and picturesque streets around every corner.

Among the places not to be missed is Piazza della Signoria, which appears even more majestic after dark. Surrounded by statues and historic buildings, the square takes on a romantic atmosphere beneath the streetlights.

Florence by night

Florence’s historic town hall, Palazzo Vecchio, is often illuminated at night, highlighting its imposing architecture.

Similarly, Piazza della Repubblica, surrounded by cafés and elegant buildings, develops an entirely different atmosphere after sunset. Its illuminated façades add to its charm.

The famous Ponte Vecchio is equally captivating. Walk across this medieval bridge, admire the views over the Arno and look at the illuminated jewellery shops that add to the magic of the setting.

The Duomo, with its spectacular dome, glows in the darkness and creates an unforgettable scene.

For a romantic experience, allow yourselves to get lost in the streets of Florence’s historic centre at night. The small squares, softly illuminated façades and reduced crowds create a unique atmosphere.

On the other side of the Arno, the Boboli Gardens are not usually open at night, but special evening openings are sometimes organised. Their sculptures and romantic pathways take on a very different character after sunset.

Finally, climb above the city to Piazzale Michelangelo and the Basilica of San Miniato al Monte for spectacular panoramic views of Florence at night. The city stretches out below you beneath a sea of twinkling lights.

Florence at night is a genuine visual spectacle, where history and romance come together in a magical atmosphere. Take the time to enjoy every corner of this iconic Italian city after sunset.

Where can you go on a day trip from Florence?

Florence is so rich in history, architecture, palazzi, basilicas, churches, picturesque streets and museums, both internationally renowned and more confidential, that you can easily spend three days there without seeing everything.

If your city break lasts longer than three days, you could spend one day exploring the surrounding region, although Florence itself contains more than enough to keep you busy for several days.

Discover the vineyards of Chianti

A tour of the Chianti vineyards is a lovely way to discover the secrets of Tuscan wine production.

The region is filled with picturesque vineyards offering tastings of internationally renowned wines in a peaceful natural setting that is particularly appealing to couples.

Take a day trip to Siena

You could also take a day trip to Siena, located approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes from Florence by train. This medieval city is famous for its shell-shaped Piazza del Campo, Gothic architecture, picturesque streets and iconic cityscape.

San Gimignano, nicknamed the “town of towers”, is known for its beautifully preserved medieval towers and historic atmosphere. A day spent there transports you back in time and adds a magical touch to your romantic getaway.

Visit Pisa

Ville de Pise

Pisa, approximately one hour from Florence by train, welcomes you with its famous Leaning Tower and Piazza dei Miracoli. Add a little more history to your romantic trip by exploring these iconic monuments together.

Exploring Florence as a couple promises a unique experience immersed in the lively, historic atmosphere of one of Italy’s most iconic cities. Its narrow streets and animated squares provide the perfect setting for wandering together, discovering picturesque corners and enjoying the local atmosphere.

Florence’s artistic wealth, with its world-famous museums and countless historic sites, provides fascinating experiences to share. From exploring art galleries to strolling through historic gardens, every moment offers another opportunity to discover the beauty of the city together.
