Romantic Geyaway Cagliari

Cagliari: discover Mediterranean passion

Stop missing out and travel more often!

Cagliari may sometimes be overshadowed by more famous Mediterranean romantic destinations such as Rome, Venice or Florence, but it reveals a magic of its own to those who take the time to explore it.

Many people think Cagliari is “a thousand years old” because its medieval past is so often discussed, particularly the Castello district, the Pisan towers and the Spanish influence, all dating back around 800 to 1,000 years. Yet the site was probably inhabited much earlier by Nuragic and perhaps even pre-Nuragic peoples, although it could not yet be described as a city at that time.

What is truly remarkable is that, unlike Rome, which retained a distinctly Roman identity throughout its history, Cagliari became a genuine Mediterranean patchwork: Phoenician, Carthaginian, Roman, Pisan, Spanish, Sardinian and Italian. It is quite a saga!

Cagliari

When is the best time to plan a romantic weekend in Cagliari?

The best time to plan a romantic weekend in Cagliari depends on your preferences in terms of weather and visitor numbers.

Spring (April to June): spring is an ideal time to visit Cagliari. Temperatures begin to rise, flowers are in full bloom and the city is less crowded than in summer. It is a lovely season for romantic walks through the parks, along the beach and around the old town’s narrow streets.

Autumn (September to October): autumn is another excellent time to visit Cagliari. Temperatures remain mild, the beaches are quieter and you can enjoy local festivals and cultural events across the city.

Summer (July to August): if you love hot summer weather and want to make the most of the beaches, summer may be right for you. Bear in mind, however, that the city can be busier during this period and temperatures can be high, especially in August.

Saisons Cagliari

Winter (November to March): winters in Cagliari are mild compared with many other parts of Europe, although rain is possible. If you would rather avoid the crowds and do not mind missing out on beach days, winter is a peaceful time to explore the city, visit its attractions and sample local food in its restaurants.

However, direct flights may become very limited or disappear altogether. You may need to choose a connecting flight or depart from a major airport such as Paris Charles de Gaulle, which makes the journey more complicated and expensive.

Overall, spring and autumn are generally considered the best seasons for a romantic weekend in Cagliari thanks to their pleasant temperatures and moderate visitor numbers.

How to get to Cagliari from France

Unfortunately, there is no ferry service from France to Cagliari, only to other ports in Sardinia.

Flying is the easiest and most direct way to reach Cagliari.

Direct flights are mainly available during the high season, in spring and summer, from Paris Orly or Charles de Gaulle with airlines such as Transavia, Air France, easyJet or Vueling. Seasonal services may also operate from Lyon, Marseille and sometimes Nice, generally with Ryanair or Volotea.

Once your flight lands, you have several options for travelling from Cagliari Elmas Airport to the city centre.

You can take a taxi directly outside the airport. This is the most convenient but also the most expensive option, although the fare remains reasonable at around €25.

Aéroport Cagliari

Shuttle buses connect the airport with the city centre approximately every 30 minutes and offer the most economical option. There are two bus stops at the airport. Remember to buy your ticket from the newsstand in the arrivals area before boarding.

Cagliari railway station is linked to the airport by a very convenient train service. Trains run regularly and the journey takes around ten minutes.

If you prefer greater independence, you can also hire a car at the airport. This can be useful if you plan to explore more of Sardinia. Otherwise, the Sardinian capital is easy to discover on foot or by bus.

Over the centuries, it served several purposes, including as a residence for the noble Carroz family and as a military hospital during the 17th-century plague epidemic. It was also fortified against French attacks during the 17th and 18th centuries. Today, the castle is a cultural centre hosting exhibitions and events.

Molentargius-Saline Regional Nature Park is an extensive wetland between Cagliari and Quartu Sant’Elena. Covering approximately 1,600 hectares, it is known for its exceptional biodiversity and important role in conserving Mediterranean wetlands.

The area was historically used for salt production, an activity that shaped both the landscape and local culture. The former salt pans remain as evidence of this industrial past and create a unique setting.

Montelargius

Located north of Poetto Beach, the park supports a wide variety of plant life, including salt-tolerant species adapted to saline soil and areas of aquatic vegetation. It is particularly famous for its flamingo population, which feeds and nests here, making the park an outstanding birdwatching destination.

Anfiteatro Romano

Admission is charged, although visitors cannot enter the amphitheatre itself and instead view it from a walkway. Its location slightly north of the botanical garden makes the two attractions easy to combine.

Although the exact identity of their builders remains uncertain, the number and distribution of these structures across Sardinia reveal an advanced, organised culture, unique architectural skills and an impressive understanding of natural materials.
