Romantic Getaway Alghero
Alghero: Golden Beaches, History and Romance in Sardinia
Treat yourself and travel more often!
Nestled on the north-west coast of beautiful Sardinia, Alghero is a seaside town steeped in history and Mediterranean charm.
Its ancient roots date back to the Phoenicians, who established a trading post in this strategic location. Over the centuries, the city has witnessed the influence of the Romans, Byzantines, Moors and Catalans, each leaving a unique mark on its architecture, culture and traditions.
This rich heritage is reflected in the winding streets of the old town, where medieval remains blend seamlessly with a lively and colourful atmosphere.
Explore the medieval alleys of the historic centre, stroll along the ancient ramparts overlooking the sea, and relax on golden sandy beaches.
Beyond its fascinating history, Alghero also boasts delicious cuisine showcasing fresh seafood and regional wines.
Alghero is far more than a beach destination. It is a place where history meets natural beauty, where romance is everywhere, and where every moment promises a unique and unforgettable experience. Prepare to lose yourself in the enchanting atmosphere of this Sardinian gem, where time seems to slow down and every day brings a new adventure.
When Should You Visit Alghero for a Romantic Getaway?
Alghero can be visited all year round, with each season offering its own unique atmosphere.
It is worth noting that reasonably priced flights are generally available between April and October.
Spring (March to May)
Mild temperatures, colourful blooms and the tranquillity of the pre-season make spring one of the best times to discover Alghero. Enjoy romantic hand-in-hand walks along peaceful beaches and admire nature awakening around you.
Summer (June to August)
Summer brings long sunny days, lively evenings and vibrant beaches. It is the perfect season to relax on the golden sands, explore bustling streets and enjoy al fresco dining by the sea.
Autumn (September to November)
Pleasant temperatures remain while the summer crowds begin to fade away. Autumn is ideal for romantic strolls, local wine tastings and discovering historical sites without the intense summer heat.
Winter (December to February)
If you enjoy quieter destinations, winter in Alghero has a special charm. The cobbled streets become peaceful and Christmas markets add a festive touch to the city.
Keep in mind that bus schedules change during autumn and winter, with fewer departures. This should be considered when planning your excursions and day trips.
Choose the season that best matches your travel style, whether you prefer summer beach days, peaceful autumn exploration or the cosy atmosphere of winter celebrations.
How to Get to Alghero
Alghero is accessible by air from many European cities thanks to Alghero-Fertilia Airport. You can also reach the city by ferry from mainland Italy.
However, direct flights from France are usually available only between April and September or October.
If you are planning an autumn or winter escape, we recommend combining Alghero with another well-connected city such as Bologna for a twin city break.
If you arrive by plane, Alghero-Fertilia Airport is located around 10 kilometres from the city centre.
A taxi ride costs approximately €30, while the airport bus costs around €1 and departs directly outside the terminal.
One of the airport’s advantages is its small size, making arrivals quick and stress-free.
For bus tickets, you can either purchase them from the small blue ticket machine inside the airport or download the very convenient Dropticket app and buy them online in advance to avoid queues.
Which Romantic Accommodation Should You Choose in Alghero?
When planning a romantic getaway to Alghero, choosing the right accommodation is essential to create an intimate atmosphere.
Consider booking a hotel room with sea views, where you can enjoy magical sunrises and sunsets together. Accommodation within the old town immerses you in the city’s historical charm, while a beachfront villa can provide a more secluded retreat.
Every traveller is different, and the best choice depends on your preferences, expectations and budget.

What to See and Do During a Romantic Weekend in Alghero
Explore the Historic Centre
Alghero’s historic centre is relatively compact but packed with attractions. Highlights include San Michele Church, Santa Barbara Church (the oldest church in the city), San Francesco Church and its cloister, Santa Maria Cathedral, as well as the city’s ancient ramparts, bastions and defensive towers
For a two- or three-day romantic getaway, you could easily spend your entire stay exploring the city centre, including the old town, the marina and the surrounding neighbourhoods. It is an ideal destination for slow travel and quality time together.
Wander through the cobbled streets, admire the Catalan architecture, discover centuries-old churches and soak up the unique atmosphere. Santa Maria Cathedral and the ancient walls offer beautiful panoramic views over the Mediterranean Sea.
Along the ramparts, you’ll find plenty of cafés where you can stop for an ice cream, a drink or a light snack.
The historic centre is rich in discoveries, and we highly recommend exploring it during a private guided tour for two.
Stroll Along the Ancient Ramparts
Profitez d’une promenade romantique sur les remparts qui entourent la vieille ville. Les vues sur la mer et les couchers de soleil sont spectaculaires. En journée, il y a des canons anciens, des catapultes et autres outils à découvrir tout le long des remparts.
Enjoy a Candlelit Dinner by the Sea
Enjoy a romantic walk along the ramparts surrounding the old town
The sea views are spectacular, particularly at sunset. During the day, you can also discover old cannons, catapults and various historical military artefacts displayed along the walls.
The combination of history, sea breezes and stunning scenery makes this one of the most romantic experiences in Alghero.
There are plenty of ways to discover Sardinian gastronomy beyond a traditional restaurant. Join a local cooking class and enjoy the meal you’ve prepared together, take a guided food and wine walk through the old town, or visit a local farm for an olive oil and Sardinian wine tasting experience.
Visit the Famous Neptune's Grotto
If you enjoy being on the water, take a boat trip to Neptune’s Grotto, one of Sardinia’s most spectacular sea caves. Some excursions even depart at sunset, making the experience even more romantic.
If boats aren’t your thing, you can also reach the grotto by taxi or bus. The bus stops directly outside the ticket office, but we strongly recommend booking both your entrance tickets and your preferred time slot in advance to avoid disappointment.
Arriving by boat also saves you from climbing the famous 400-step staircase. However, if you’re reasonably fit, the descent (and climb back up) rewards you with stunning panoramic views over the cliffs and the Mediterranean, making it an unforgettable part of the experience. Once inside, the guided visit lasts around 45 minutes to one hour and is absolutely spectacular.
Relax on Alghero's Golden Beaches
Alghero is famous for its beautiful golden sandy beaches. If you’re visiting during the summer, enjoy a refreshing swim together. Outside the peak season, the beaches become much quieter and are perfect for peaceful romantic walks.
On your way back from Neptune’s Grotto, consider stopping at Mugoni Beach or Le Bombarde Beach.
Closer to the historic centre, you can also unwind on Maria Pia Beach or Lido San Giovanni.
Discover Alghero's Coral Heritage
Make the most of your stay by exploring Alghero’s fascinating Mediterranean coral tradition. Start with a visit to the Coral Museum, where you’ll learn about its history and traditional craftsmanship.
Afterwards, wander hand in hand through the charming streets of the old town, browsing the many coral jewellery boutiques and perhaps choosing a special souvenir together.
Our private romantic walking tour also includes the opportunity to meet a local coral artisan and discover this unique craft in an intimate setting.
Alghero is also home to several other excellent museums, including the Giuseppe Manno Museum, the Archaeological Museum, and the highly recommended Antoine de Saint-Exupéry Museum, housed inside a beautifully restored medieval tower. The location alone makes it well worth a visit.
Discover the Ancient Nuragic Civilisation
Your romantic getaway in Alghero can also include a fascinating journey through Sardinia’s ancient past by exploring the mysterious Nuragic civilisation.
Discover impressive nuraghes, prehistoric stone towers unique to Sardinia, and immerse yourselves in the history of one of the island’s oldest cultures. Surrounded by unspoilt landscapes, these archaeological sites offer a wonderfully peaceful setting for a cultural adventure together.
There are two major archaeological sites near Alghero, one of which is much easier to reach by public transport.
The Palmavera Nuragic Complex is the easiest to visit without a car. Simply take the bus and get off at Bivio Bombarde (ask the driver), then enjoy a pleasant 10-minute walk to the entrance.
Located around 6 km from Alghero, Anghelu Ruju is a remarkable pre-Nuragic necropolis dating back nearly 4,000 years before Christ. Discovered in the early 20th century, the site features around forty artificial caves carved into sandstone, making it one of Sardinia’s most unique archaeological treasures.

Within the historic centre, Bastioni Marco Polo is undoubtedly one of the best places to admire the sunset. The ancient sea walls offer magnificent panoramic views and become particularly magical as the sky turns shades of orange and pink.
The Lungomare Dante seafront promenade is another lovely place for an evening stroll. Find a bench or settle into a waterfront café while watching the sun slowly disappear beyond the horizon.
A little further from town, Maria Pia Beach is another peaceful location where you can relax together at sunset.
For even more spectacular viewpoints, head to Porto Conte Park, Capo Caccia, the tower housing the Antoine de Saint-Exupéry Museum, or the historic Torre del Porticciolo. These locations are easier to reach by car, as public transport is fairly limited.
Try to arrive before sunset to fully appreciate the changing colours of the Mediterranean sky.
For a completely different perspective, you can also book a sunset boat cruise with an aperitif included, offering unforgettable views of Sardinia’s coastline from the sea.
Discover Alghero by Night
As night falls, Alghero takes on an even more romantic atmosphere. The narrow streets of the old town are illuminated by hundreds of strings of lights adorned with charming lanterns, creating a magical setting for an evening stroll.

The Lido and harbour area also come alive after dark. Enjoy a leisurely walk after dinner and soak up the enchanting atmosphere, or make the evening even more memorable by joining our private Alghero by Night guided tour.
