When should you visit Bologna for a romantic getaway?

The best time for a romantic weekend in Bologna is generally during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). These seasons offer pleasant temperatures for strolling through the streets, enjoying outdoor meals and embracing the romantic atmosphere that fills the city.

That said, these are only general recommendations. Since Bologna boasts more than 38 kilometres (24 miles) of porticoes, you can explore the city all day long while being sheltered from almost any bad weather. Take advantage of quieter periods and flight deals, and visit whenever it suits you best.

How do you get from Bologna Airport to the city centre?

Once you arrive at Bologna Airport, reaching the city centre is quick and easy. You can either take a taxi for a direct journey or hop aboard the Marconi Express, the airport shuttle train, which you can even pay for using your contactless bank card just before the ticket gates.

Modern, practical and time-saving, the Marconi Express entered service in 2020 and takes just 8 minutes to reach Bologna Central Station. It’s incredibly fast. Of course, speed comes at a price, and a return ticket costs around €18, although that’s still considerably cheaper than taking a taxi.

If you’re enjoying a romantic weekend on a tighter budget, we recommend taking bus 944, which is a much more affordable option, or combining bus 944 + bus 81 or bus 944 + bus 91. Since the Marconi Express was introduced, there is no longer a direct airport shuttle bus to Bologna city centre.

Your options are either:

take bus 944 from the airport, get off at Ospedale Maggiore, then transfer to bus 81 or 91 to reach the city centre;

walk around 15–20 minutes to the Birra bus stop, where you can catch bus 81 or 91 directly.

It’s not the most convenient system and probably encourages travellers to spend more on the Marconi Express. Having tried it several times ourselves, we recommend taking bus 944 first, then waiting for bus 81 or 91. Carrefour inside the airport sells bus tickets, and you can also use the ticket machine or the Dropticket app.

Stroll along Strada Maggiore

On the left-hand side of the square, discover the charming Palazzo Isolani, a private residence featuring a magnificent spiral staircase designed by Jacopo Barozzi da Vignola. You can admire the staircase without disturbing anyone, but if you wish to visit the other rooms, whose entrance is located elsewhere, be sure to ask for permission, as this historic building is now mainly used for special events, including weddings, and is generally not open to the public. Nearby, you’ll also find Corte Isolani, a charming covered passage lined with boutiques, restaurants and cafés.

Tagliatelle al ragù: one of the region’s most iconic dishes. In Bologna, it’s called tagliatelle al ragù, not “spaghetti Bolognese”. This is the authentic local version of pasta with meat sauce.

Tortellini: these small, knot-shaped stuffed pasta are another Bologna speciality. They are generally filled with meat or cheese and served with delicious sauces.

Bresaola: although Bresaola originates from the Valtellina region, it is also very popular in Bologna. It consists of air-dried, salted beef, usually served in thin slices with olive oil and cheese.
