Bologna: Let the Red City Rekindle Your Love

Stop depriving yourselves and travel together more often!

Welcome to Bologna, Italy, a vibrant city where love blends with delicious flavours and a rich history. Wander through picturesque streets, savour exquisite cuisine and discover the hidden treasures of this charming Italian city.

Bologne

Bologna has several nicknames: La Dotta (“The Learned”, thanks to its famous university), La Grassa (“The Fat”, in reference to its cuisine), and finally La Rossa (“The Red City”), a nod to the city’s countless red rooftops.

Let yourself be guided through the maze of this multifaceted city, discover its hidden treasures and soak up the enchanting atmosphere that fills its streets. In this guide, we invite you to experience Bologna as a couple, in search of its most romantic spots, its finest flavours and the unforgettable moments you can share together. In Bologna, love takes on a unique colour—that of the Red City, awakened by the gentle whisper of centuries gone by.

When should you visit Bologna for a romantic getaway?

The best time for a romantic weekend in Bologna is generally during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). These seasons offer pleasant temperatures for strolling through the streets, enjoying outdoor meals and embracing the romantic atmosphere that fills the city.

That said, these are only general recommendations. Since Bologna boasts more than 38 kilometres (24 miles) of porticoes, you can explore the city all day long while being sheltered from almost any bad weather. Take advantage of quieter periods and flight deals, and visit whenever it suits you best.

How do you get from Bologna Airport to the city centre?

Once you arrive at Bologna Airport, reaching the city centre is quick and easy. You can either take a taxi for a direct journey or hop aboard the Marconi Express, the airport shuttle train, which you can even pay for using your contactless bank card just before the ticket gates.

Aéroport Bologne

Modern, practical and time-saving, the Marconi Express entered service in 2020 and takes just 8 minutes to reach Bologna Central Station. It’s incredibly fast. Of course, speed comes at a price, and a return ticket costs around €18, although that’s still considerably cheaper than taking a taxi.

If you’re enjoying a romantic weekend on a tighter budget, we recommend taking bus 944, which is a much more affordable option, or combining bus 944 + bus 81 or bus 944 + bus 91. Since the Marconi Express was introduced, there is no longer a direct airport shuttle bus to Bologna city centre.

Your options are either:

  • take bus 944 from the airport, get off at Ospedale Maggiore, then transfer to bus 81 or 91 to reach the city centre;

or

  • walk around 15–20 minutes to the Birra bus stop, where you can catch bus 81 or 91 directly.

It’s not the most convenient system and probably encourages travellers to spend more on the Marconi Express. Having tried it several times ourselves, we recommend taking bus 944 first, then waiting for bus 81 or 91. Carrefour inside the airport sells bus tickets, and you can also use the ticket machine or the Dropticket app.

Which cosy accommodation should you choose for your weekend in Bologna?

When planning your romantic weekend in Bologna, why not choose a charming guesthouse or a hotel with a private jacuzzi?

Discover Bolognese gastronomy

Did you know that one of Bologna’s three affectionate nicknames is “La Grassa” (“The Fat”)? Although it may sound rather unflattering at first, don’t be fooled! This nickname doesn’t refer to the size of the portions, but to the city’s extraordinary culinary heritage. Bologna is renowned for its delicious and authentic cuisine, where every dish is a true gastronomic experience. Let yourselves be tempted by the wonderful flavours of “La Grassa” and discover the culinary treasures of this unique Italian city.

Here are some local specialities and gastronomic experiences you shouldn’t miss in Bologna:

Mortadella di Bologna hardly needs an introduction and has long since become popular throughout Europe. This delicious cold cut is traditionally served in thin slices.

Tagliatelle al ragù: one of the region’s most iconic dishes. In Bologna, it’s called tagliatelle al ragù, not “spaghetti Bolognese”. This is the authentic local version of pasta with meat sauce.

Tortellini: these small, knot-shaped stuffed pasta are another Bologna speciality. They are generally filled with meat or cheese and served with delicious sauces.

Bresaola: although Bresaola originates from the Valtellina region, it is also very popular in Bologna. It consists of air-dried, salted beef, usually served in thin slices with olive oil and cheese.

Crescentine: these small fried breads are a delicious accompaniment to many traditional Bolognese dishes. They are often served with cheese, cured meats or meat-based accompaniments.

Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena: although Modena is the neighbouring city, its famous balsamic vinegar is a regional speciality widely available in Bologna. Be sure to taste this aged vinegar, sometimes matured for several decades.

Cheeses: the Emilia-Romagna region, of which Bologna is part, is also famous for its cheeses. Try Parmigiano Reggiano and ricotta, both widely used in local cuisine.

Gelato: finish your meal with a delicious Italian ice cream. Bologna is home to many gelaterias serving authentic and tempting flavours.

Enjoy Bologna’s culinary scene by exploring its local markets, trattorias and traditional restaurants to discover the richness and diversity of the region’s cuisine—and don’t forget to accompany your meal with a fine Chianti.

Immerse yourselves in culture

For lovers of art and culture, Bologna certainly won’t disappoint, with more than 50 museums to explore throughout the city.
