When is the best time to visit Split for a romantic getaway?
The best time for a romantic weekend in Split depends on your personal preferences and the activities you would like to enjoy. Here is an overview of the different seasons in Split.
Spring, from March to May
Temperatures are pleasant, generally ranging from 15°C to 25°C. The vegetation is lush and the city’s gardens begin to bloom. This is an ideal time to explore the old town without the summer crowds.
Summer, from June to August
This is the peak tourist season, with temperatures often exceeding 30°C. Beaches and water activities are particularly popular. Evenings are lively, with numerous events and festivals taking place throughout the city.
Autumn, from September to November
Temperatures remain pleasant, ranging from 15°C to 25°C at the beginning of the season. Visitor numbers fall compared with summer, while the sea is usually still warm enough for swimming in September. Cultural festivals and other events continue throughout the season.
Winter, from December to February
Temperatures are cooler, ranging from 5°C to 15°C, but remain mild compared with many other European destinations. The city is quieter, creating a more intimate atmosphere. Some tourist attractions may have reduced opening hours during winter.
Depending on your preferences regarding weather, visitor numbers and activities, you can choose the season that best suits you. Spring and autumn are often considered the best times to visit Split, as temperatures are pleasant and the city is less crowded.
How do you get from Split Airport to the city centre?
Several transport options are available to travel from Split Airport to the city centre.
Taxis are available outside the airport terminal. This is the quickest option, with the journey to the city centre taking around 30 minutes, depending on traffic.
A direct airport shuttle bus runs between the airport and Split. At approximately €8 per journey, it is considerably cheaper than a taxi. You can purchase tickets here: https://plesoprijevoz.hr/en/split-croatia/
Public bus number 37 also connects the airport with Split, while travelling in the opposite direction to Trogir. It departs approximately every 20 minutes and takes around one hour to reach Split. You can check the timetable here: https://www.promet-split.hr/en/bus-line-37. This is the most affordable option and gives you an opportunity to admire the Dalmatian coast along the way. Bus numbers 38 and 2 also connect the airport area with Split.
If you prefer greater independence, several car rental companies operate at the airport.
Before choosing your transport, remember to check the latest timetables and fares. You should also consider the exact location of your accommodation in Split when deciding which option will be most convenient.
Which cosy and romantic accommodation should you choose in Split?
Every romantic weekend begins with choosing accommodation that suits both your expectations and your budget.
You can stay within Emperor Diocletian’s ancient city, or elsewhere in the historic centre beyond the palace walls. The marina district to the west is another excellent option, with accommodation offering beautiful views of the harbour, city and sea.
To help you find suitable romantic accommodation more quickly, we have selected a range of properties for you. From hotels with panoramic sea views to charming guest houses in the heart of the old town, you will find the perfect place to create new memories together.
What can couples see and do during a romantic weekend in Split?
Discover Split’s historic charm together
Begin your trip by exploring the beautifully preserved remains of Diocletian’s Palace, an unmissable city within the city and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its cobbled lanes, picturesque squares and remains of ancient Roman architecture create an enchanting atmosphere that is perfect for a romantic walk.
Exploring this historic site as a couple with our local guide will make the experience even more personal and intimate.
Take a romantic walk along the waterfront
Split’s waterfront promenade is known as the Riva. It offers magnificent views across the Adriatic Sea.
Walk hand in hand, watch the boats sail past, find a secluded spot for a quiet moment together and do not miss the spectacular sunsets that fill the sky with warm colours.
Taste Dalmatian cuisine
Discover Split’s rich culinary scene by visiting its local restaurants. Sample fresh seafood, traditional Dalmatian dishes and locally produced wines.
A romantic dinner in a restaurant with an outstanding sea view is one of the essential experiences to enjoy during your romantic weekend in Split.
Relax on the beach
If you plan your romantic weekend during the summer, Split’s beaches are ideal for relaxing. Choose a quiet spot, lay down your towels and enjoy the sunshine and crystal-clear water.
Within walking distance of Split’s historic centre, you will find Bačvice Beach. Be aware that it can become extremely crowded in summer, like many popular beaches around the world, which naturally makes it a little less romantic! The beach is also home to a good restaurant overlooking the sea, which should be booked in advance.
Several smaller beaches can also be found around Marjan Hill. You can stop and enjoy one of them while exploring the hill and its natural surroundings.
More adventurous couples can also try one of the many water activities available for a shared dose of adrenaline.
Discover Marjan Hill
Marjan Hill is one of Split’s hidden gems. It offers spectacular panoramic views across the city, the Adriatic Sea and the surrounding islands, as well as several beaches and a wonderfully romantic setting.
This natural oasis is a peaceful place where you can escape the bustle of the city. Follow the winding paths through the pine forest, discover secluded benches with breathtaking views and find a quiet place for an intimate picnic.
In some areas, you may also come across ancient ruins and charming churches that add a touch of history to your romantic getaway. At sunset, Marjan Hill becomes a magical place from which to watch the sun disappear with your partner. It is an unforgettable experience and the perfect addition to a romantic weekend in Split.
You can choose our private guided tour of Marjan Hill and combine it with a visit to the museum of your choice on the hill.
Explore the romantic district of Veli Varoš
While visiting Marjan Hill, take the opportunity to explore Varoš, the neighbourhood located between the hill and the historic centre.
Dating back to the 14th century, its narrow lanes, stone houses, medieval churches and intimate atmosphere make it a delightful setting for a romantic walk.
Attend a performance at the Croatian National Theatre
Attend a play, ballet, opera or concert at the Croatian National Theatre in Split. This historic venue creates a unique atmosphere for a romantic evening with your partner.
Designed by architect Zanze and opened in 1893, it is one of Croatia’s oldest surviving theatres.
Before planning your visit, check the theatre’s current programme to see which performances and events will take place during your stay in Split.
Watch the sunset together
Split offers a variety of places where couples can watch the sunset and enjoy a special moment together.
When exploring Marjan Hill, try to time your walk so that it ends at sunset. This is not always easy depending on the season, particularly during summer when daytime temperatures can be very high.
Near the top of the hill, stop at Vidilica Café for a drink or even dinner while enjoying both the spectacular views over Split and the sunset.
Elsewhere on Marjan Hill, you could buy some local produce in advance and enjoy a picnic at Kasjuni Beach, located on the southern side of the peninsula.
Beyond Marjan Hill, Split has several other wonderful sunset spots. You could, for example, choose accommodation near the marina and enjoy magnificent views across the city from your own windows.
The Riva promenade also provides lovely views of the sunset over the Adriatic Sea. Stroll along the waterfront while admiring the brilliant colours spreading across the sky.
Another perfect place to watch the sunset in Split is Bačvice Beach, where you can combine the experience with dinner in a restaurant offering panoramic views.
Explore Split by night
Cities take on an entirely different character after dark, when their streets and monuments are illuminated. Split is no exception and some parts of the city acquire an almost mystical atmosphere at night.
Diocletian’s Palace
Diocletian’s Palace lies at the historic heart of Split. Built by Roman Emperor Diocletian in the 4th century, it develops a very special atmosphere once illuminated. Its cobbled lanes and floodlit Roman ruins create a truly unique setting.
The Cathedral of Saint Domnius, located within the palace, is another architectural treasure. At night, the lighting highlights its impressive details. The palace’s northern entrance, the Golden Gate, is also worth seeing after dark. Its illuminated walls and monumental gateway lend this part of the city a particularly mystical quality.
The Riva promenade
Located along the waterfront, the Riva comes alive at night with its cafés, bars and restaurants. The buildings lining the promenade are beautifully illuminated, creating picturesque views across the harbour.
People’s Square, or Narodni Trg
Surrounded by historic buildings and cafés, People’s Square becomes especially charming in the evening. Its soft lighting creates a warm and inviting atmosphere.
The statue of Grgur Ninski
This imposing statue of Grgur Ninski, a medieval Croatian bishop, attracts plenty of attention during the day but appears even more majestic at night.
Where can you take a romantic day trip from Split?
Discover the medieval town of Trogir
Split offers more than enough to fill a two-day romantic weekend, and we recommend enjoying the city fully rather than trying to fit too many places into a short stay.
For a longer getaway, however, you can plan excursions to nearby destinations. Trogir, a neighbouring island town and UNESCO World Heritage Site, is perfect for a romantic day out. Admire its medieval and Renaissance architecture and lose yourselves in its picturesque cobbled lanes. To make the excursion even more enjoyable, you can travel from Split to Trogir by boat.
Trogir is a genuinely charming little town. Together with the neighbouring island of Čiovo, where you can enjoy nature walks, strolls along the coast and time on the beach, it deserves a city break in its own right. You could spend a longer romantic weekend exploring both Split and Trogir or simply return another time, especially as Split Airport is located very close to Trogir.
Visit the nearby islands
Take a ferry to one of the nearby islands, such as Brač, Hvar or Šolta, for a romantic island escape filled with secluded beaches, picturesque villages and beautiful coves.
Alternatively, explore the islands aboard a catamaran.
You could also go snorkelling or diving.
Whether you are looking for a historic atmosphere, panoramic views or simply a peaceful place in which to relax together, Split offers plenty of romantic options.
If your budget allows, you could even book a scenic flight over the islands and enjoy truly breathtaking views.
Marvel at the beauty of Krka National Park
A popular day trip from Split is an excursion to Krka National Park, where you can discover magnificent waterfalls and beautiful natural scenery.
This excursion is conducted in English.
