Romantic Getaway Malta

Malta: history, romance and an enchanting weekend in the Mediterranean archipelago

Stop missing out and travel more often!

perfect destination for a short romantic trip and a true escape from everyday life. The official languages are Maltese and English, so remember to brush up on your English before you go 🙂

île de Malte

Malta’s history is rich and complex, marked by centuries of invasions and diverse cultural influences. From the period of Arab influence to the Norman occupation, from the crucial presence of the Knights of the Order of St John in the face of the Ottomans to the short-lived French occupation under Napoleon, the archipelago has experienced a series of events that shaped its destiny.

The British subsequently took control in the 19th century, establishing a strategic colony that lasted until Malta gained independence in 1964. Today, the archipelago bears witness to this complex history through its monuments and unique cultural identity.

As Malta is around a three-hour flight from France, we recommend allowing yourself the equivalent of two long weekends to make the most of your time and secure better prices—or perhaps even special offers—as we also suggest for Sardinia. Two short stays over the course of one week, one on Malta and the other on its lovely and very different neighbour, Gozo, will allow you to create unforgettable memories and enjoy plenty of romantic moments together.

When is the best time for a romantic weekend on the island of Malta?

Couple en balade Gozo

Malta enjoys a Mediterranean climate, making it a pleasant destination throughout the year, just like cities such as Dubrovnik, Alghero and Cagliari in southern Sardinia.

As Malta lies in the far south of the Mediterranean, summers can be extremely hot for sightseeing, particularly when there is no wind. It is also a popular summer holiday destination for families wanting to enjoy its sandy beaches and water sports.

For a short romantic getaway, however, the periods from March to early June and from September to November are particularly pleasant. During these months, temperatures are mild, the days are sunny and there are fewer tourists, creating a more intimate atmosphere that is perfect for peacefully exploring the island as a couple.

How do you reach Valletta or Mdina from Luqa Airport?

Several transport options are available from Malta International Airport in Luqa to Valletta or Mdina, the island’s former capital.

By taxi

Taxis are available at the airport, providing a quick and convenient way to reach Valletta or Mdina. The journey takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes, depending on your destination. If you are looking for an even cheaper option, Bolt—Malta’s equivalent of Uber—is a good alternative.

By bus

Malta’s public bus network is extensive, although buses stop running after midnight. If you arrive late at night, you will therefore need to take a taxi or Bolt. During the day, you can catch the X4 bus outside the airport and reach Valletta in around 40 minutes. The easiest option is to download the Tallinja App.

Aeroport Malte

Bus 201 takes you directly to Rabat, just outside Mdina, in approximately one hour. Along the way, it follows a scenic route past the Blue Grotto, the megalithic temples and the Dingli Cliffs before continuing towards Rabat. Other routes are possible with a change. You can plan your journeys on the Malta Public Transport website.

By rental car

If you prefer to be independent, numerous car rental companies operate at the airport. However, using local public transport is part of Malta’s charm and character. In recent years, the Maltese have replaced their historic old yellow buses—sadly!—with modern, comfortable electric buses. In addition to being part of the local experience, public transport is also a more environmentally responsible way to travel, so we recommend it.

Where should you stay in Malta for a romantic atmosphere?

The Barrister

For a romantic stay in Malta, consider the following areas and towns on the island.

The capital, Valletta, is filled with charm, from its narrow streets and picturesque squares to its views over the sea. Boutique hotels and romantic accommodation options are plentiful. It is also the main transport hub for buses serving the entire island.

The Birgu district is particularly romantic, and you can easily reach Valletta’s historic centre on the opposite side of the harbour by hopping aboard a small boat 🙂

Mdina: This medieval city, also known as the “Silent City”, offers an incredibly romantic atmosphere with its cobbled lanes and historic buildings. Hotels within this beautifully preserved area are perfect for a romantic getaway.

Mellieħa Village, not Mellieħa Bay, is located in the north of the island and offers picturesque beaches and a quieter atmosphere. It is an ideal choice if you are looking for peace and relaxation.

Whether you choose Valletta’s old town, the tranquillity of Mdina or the beaches of Mellieħa, Malta offers romantic places to stay for every taste.

What romantic things can you do during your couple’s getaway in Malta?

Explore the capital, Valletta

Photomontage La Vallette à Malte

Malta’s capital, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is renowned for its charming streets, picturesque squares and stunning views over the sea. The Barrakka Gardens, where you can watch the sunset, are a particularly lovely place to explore.

Geographically, Valletta is divided between its historic centre and the Three Cities located across the harbour. Among them, the especially picturesque Birgu district is not to be missed during your romantic weekend in Malta. It is home to Fort St Angelo, the Inquisitor’s Palace, the Malta Maritime Museum, a maze of charming lanes and numerous fish and seafood restaurants.

We have created a private guided tour offering an intimate introduction to these two sides of Valletta. It allows you to explore both the historic centre and one of the most picturesque cities across the harbour, with a mini-cruise included for good measure…

Enjoy romantic dinners on the island

Like any beautiful island worthy of the name, Malta has a wide range of restaurants to suit every taste.

You can choose a traditional restaurant frequented by locals and serving Maltese cuisine, enjoy dinner in a medieval restaurant with a traditional Maltese music or dance performance in costume for an entertaining cultural evening, or dine at a seafront restaurant with breathtaking views. Why not try one of each?

We have selected restaurants in Valletta and elsewhere on the island to make choosing easier.

Immerse yourself in Maltese culinary traditions and folklore

Ta Marija

What a memorable experience the Ta’ Marija restaurant in Mosta is! It is a genuine Maltese institution.

With its warm atmosphere and generous menu firmly rooted in traditional cuisine, it is difficult not to feel at home here. The restaurant exudes rustic charm with a festive touch, particularly if you are fortunate enough to attend one of its Maltese folklore evenings. Performances featuring traditional music and dancing add another dimension to your meal, immersing you in Maltese culture.

And then there is the food, of course! Portions tend to be generous—as is the Maltese way—and the classics do not disappoint. The fenkata, or rabbit, bragioli and even the fish dishes are beautifully prepared. Not forgetting homemade pastizzi as a delicious appetiser.

To top it all off, the service is consistently excellent. The team is friendly and welcoming and always happy to share recommendations.

Take a mini-cruise in a “Maltese gondola”

Add a picturesque touch to your Maltese island experience. One of the most romantic and typically local activities to enjoy during your stay is a trip aboard one of Malta’s traditional boats, such as a luzzu or dgħajsa.

The luzzu is Malta’s distinctive, brightly coloured traditional fishing boat. It is characterised by the Eye of Osiris painted on its bow, believed to bring luck and protection. Luzzus are still often used for fishing and are particularly common in the fishing harbour of Marsaxlokk, where you can admire these picturesque boats while enjoying fresh seafood along the waterfront. Today, they are also used to carry locals and visitors between Valletta Harbour and the Three Cities.

Luzzu

The dgħajsa is a small, flat-bottomed boat often used as a water taxi in Valletta’s Grand Harbour. These traditional boats are usually decorated in vivid colours and offer a unique way to discover the city from the water. A dgħajsa trip can carry you through Valletta’s picturesque harbour, providing a different perspective on the Maltese capital.

During a mini-cruise in a “Maltese gondola”, you can appreciate the beauty of these traditional boats while exploring the crystal-clear waters surrounding Malta. Whether you are looking for a romantic experience or simply want to discover the island’s maritime culture, it provides a unique glimpse into Maltese island life.

You can, of course, rent a boat if you have the appropriate licence or book a more extensive private excursion around the Grand Harbour. Alternatively, explore the island from the crystal-clear waters of the Mediterranean on a romantic cruise. You can discover secluded coves and enjoy a magical sunset together.

Visit Mdina, the Silent City

A fortified city and Malta’s former capital, Mdina has a unique medieval atmosphere shaped by multiple cultural influences. Wander through its cobbled lanes, discover architectural treasures such as St Paul’s Cathedral, lose yourselves in the maze of streets and admire the views from the bastions.

Explore southern Malta

Southern Malta is home to natural treasures that you can explore independently or in the company of our knowledgeable local guide.

From the colourful fishing village of Marsaxlokk to the Blue Grotto, the UNESCO-listed megalithic temples and the Dingli Cliffs, the southern coast of Malta is filled with fascinating sights.

Discover the megalithic temples

Temples megalithiques Malte

If you plan sufficiently far in advance—allow up to six months to make sure you secure tickets—visit the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum. This carefully preserved and protected site consists of prehistoric underground burial chambers unlike anything else in the world. A limited number of tickets are sold at 7 a.m. at Valletta’s National Museum of Archaeology, but there is no guarantee that you will obtain one, as demand is high and the queue can be long.

The easily accessible Tarxien Temples are located nearby.

Farther south stand the two megalithic temples of Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra, protected beneath large canopies. They are located almost side by side, can be reached by bus and are not far from the Blue Grotto.

Watch the sunset from the Dingli Cliffs

Coucher de soleil Malte

The Dingli Cliffs offer magnificent views over the rugged coastline and the Mediterranean Sea. They are a romantic place to watch the sunset together or enjoy a picnic after buying some local produce.

You can also stop for an intimate meal before travelling back towards the Silent City of Mdina.

Discover northern Malta

Located in the north of the island, Mellieħa offers picturesque beaches and a quieter atmosphere. It is an ideal choice if you are looking for peace and relaxation. Explore the impressive architecture of its parish church and wander through the village’s picturesque streets.

Visit Marfa Ridge

Enjoy a peaceful walk along Marfa Ridge and admire panoramic views over the Mediterranean and neighbouring islands. It is a quiet, secluded place that is perfect for spending time together.

Popeye Village

Although this purpose-built village is primarily associated with family entertainment because the film Popeye was shot here, Popeye Village and its grotto can still provide a fun experience for couples. Explore the caves and enjoy the sea views, particularly outside the summer season when there are far fewer visitors.

Golden Bay

Another beautiful beach on the north-western side of the island, Golden Bay is a romantic place to relax together on the sand, swim in the clear water and enjoy the Mediterranean sunshine.

Għadira Nature Reserve

If you are nature lovers, the Għadira Nature Reserve is an ideal place for a peaceful walk. Discover the local flora and fauna while simply enjoying one another’s company.

Take an evening stroll through Valletta and Mdina

When visiting these two cities, make sure you also experience each of them after dark. You can even book a combined night tour of Valletta, Mosta and Mdina.

Valletta by night

The capital is filled with magnificent illuminated landmarks, from the Triton Fountain at the city entrance to the Barrakka Gardens, narrow streets, fortifications and cathedral.

In my opinion, Mdina is even more magical at night. With fewer people and fewer streets, it is an exceptionally romantic place both by day and after dark, a city where you can happily lose yourselves and marvel at your surroundings.

Mdina by night

Which excursions can you take beyond Malta’s main island?

Explore the island of Gozo!

Gozo has its own dedicated page because we do not recommend rushing around the island if you want an authentic experience. It is a truly romantic and peaceful little corner of paradise. Admittedly, it is hotter and busier during the summer, but it is perfect outside the peak season.

Gozo

Take the ferry to Gozo from Valletta and discover the island’s unspoilt natural landscapes, including the site of the spectacular Azure Window rock formation, which collapsed in 2017. Instead of taking a simple day trip, we strongly recommend spending an entire weekend or two to three days on Gozo itself, perhaps staying in one of our carefully selected romantic accommodation options.

This peaceful and less frequently visited island is filled with treasures waiting to be discovered. Spending a few days there will allow you to truly relax, absorb its atmosphere—which is very different from that of Malta’s main island—and enjoy quality time with your partner.

Discover the island of Comino

Located between Malta’s main island and Gozo, this tiny island also deserves your attention. It is best known for the crystal-clear waters of its Blue Lagoon. Avoid it during the summer, when it becomes crowded with both visitors and locals.

You can hike around the islet in two or three hours before cooling off with a swim in the Blue Lagoon or the less famous Crystal Lagoon. Please note that since 2025, visitors have been required to reserve a date and time slot to help protect the area and prevent it from being overwhelmed by boats and excessive numbers of tourists. We welcome this initiative because the situation had become rather chaotic! Make your reservation here: https://blcomino.com/product/blue-lagoon/, or simply book an organised excursion and let someone else take care of everything.

Malta is filled with romantic gems combining history, nature and Mediterranean charm. Whether you explore its historic cities, relax on a secluded beach or savour its delicious cuisine, Malta promises a memorable romantic getaway.
