Romantic Getaway Dubrovnik
Dubrovnik: a romantic getaway in the heart of the Pearl of the Adriatic
Treat yourselves and travel more often!
Discover Dubrovnik, the “Pearl of the Adriatic”, Croatia’s answer to the French Riviera, but with an exclusive and romantic touch that sets it apart.
Far more than just a seaside destination, this Croatian city embodies elegance and history around every corner. Away from the usual clichés, Dubrovnik offers couples a unique experience. Soak up its medieval atmosphere while wandering along its cobbled streets and admiring breathtaking coastal views.
When is the perfect time for a romantic getaway in Dubrovnik?
There is no perfect time. Travel whenever you wish, as Dubrovnik enjoys a Mediterranean climate with hot summers similar to those of the French Riviera.
However, it is best to avoid the height of summer because of the crowds and scorching temperatures. Dubrovnik becomes the Dalmatian Riviera in summer, so be prepared. Traffic jams are just as bad too, with the journey from the airport to the city taking an hour or more instead of the usual 30 minutes.
For a romantic getaway, the time of year does not really matter since you will be together!
As with city breaks in general, consider travelling between March and May or from September to November. These periods offer pleasant weather and more affordable prices.
If you are travelling on a budget, compare flight prices before choosing the dates of your romantic getaway.
How do you reach central Dubrovnik from the airport?
Dubrovnik Airport is approximately 30 minutes by car from the historic centre. Taxis and shuttle buses will take you quickly to the Old Town.
The airport shuttle costs €10 each way or €14 for a return ticket. Alternatively, you can take the Libertas public buses 11, 27 or 38, which cost around half the price, with the option to buy your tickets online in advance here.
If you are driving, car parks are available outside the historic centre, which is, of course, pedestrianised and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Find a romantic hideaway in Dubrovnik
Choose an intimate romantic property in the Old Town to make the most of your time, especially during a short city break.
Another ideal location, and in my opinion an even more romantic one because of its beautiful views, lies above the city, between Dubrovnik and the Jadranska Magistrala road. The evening views and sunsets are truly spectacular and, as an added bonus, prices tend to be more affordable.
If you are planning to stay for a week during the warmer months, you could also consider staying on one of the neighbouring islands. Visit Dubrovnik on the days you arrive and leave, then spend the rest of your holiday beside the sea.
Charming hotels and picturesque holiday rentals will offer you an authentic experience just a short distance from Dubrovnik’s city walls.
Because planning a romantic getaway can be time consuming, we have done the work for you and selected hotels, guesthouses and apartments to considerably reduce your research time.
There is always a wealth of things to do during a city break. However, this is your romantic getaway, so we have specifically selected charming experiences for the two of you while ensuring that most of the city’s essential attractions are covered.
What should you see and do in Dubrovnik during your romantic getaway?
Explore the preserved UNESCO listed city walls
Split, Trogir, the Plitvice Lakes and Zadar are just some of Croatia’s many UNESCO listed destinations. Dubrovnik is no exception. It remains one of the few European cities completely surrounded by city walls that have been carefully preserved and restored despite the wars.
The walls are therefore an absolute must during your visit to Dubrovnik, and a private guided tour exploring their history is highly recommended. Our local guide, who speaks impeccable French, will make your visit unforgettable as you explore the Old Town and its city walls. She will also be delighted to act as your personal photographer, saving you from stretching your arm to take selfies and allowing you to return home with beautiful memories.
To enjoy the walls as a couple and avoid the busiest periods, visit early in the morning or time your tour to coincide with sunset, whatever the season. Magical…
Wander through the picturesque Old Town
Stroll along the cobbled streets of the Old Town, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Cathedral of the Assumption, Sponza Palace and the medieval city walls reveal Dubrovnik’s rich history. Choose a private guided tour for a more insightful and intimate experience, together with some exclusive discoveries.
Enjoy an intimate dinner in Dubrovnik: a feast for the senses
Treat yourselves to an unforgettable dining experience in Dubrovnik, combining traditional flavours, spectacular views and refined cuisine. The city is filled with konobas, traditional taverns where you can enjoy authentic Dalmatian food in a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
Konobas are known for showcasing fresh local ingredients, offering a delicious introduction to the region’s culinary traditions.
If you are looking for a more sophisticated experience, Dubrovnik also has several fine dining restaurants, including Michelin starred establishments, where culinary creativity meets Mediterranean flavours. These restaurants serve exquisite menus featuring local produce in an elegant setting that is perfect for a romantic dinner.
For an equally special atmosphere, choose one of the restaurants perched on the city walls. These establishments offer not only delicious food but also magnificent views over the Adriatic Sea and the illuminated Old Town. Imagine enjoying a wonderful meal while admiring Dubrovnik’s twinkling lights beneath a starry sky. Some restaurants even have panoramic terraces for an especially romantic experience.
Whether you choose a traditional konoba, a fine dining restaurant or an establishment with breathtaking views, Dubrovnik promises a feast for the senses where delicious food perfectly complements the romantic atmosphere of this exceptional city.
Take a romantic walk along the Adriatic coast
Let yourselves be swept away by an enchanting walk beside the sparkling waters of the Adriatic, a romantic experience that captures the very essence of Dubrovnik.
Leave the historic centre and walk either towards the fort or in the opposite direction, particularly in the late afternoon, to admire the city from a distance.
As the sun sinks below the horizon, the warm colours of the sky are reflected across the sea, creating a magical atmosphere for an intimate moment together.
Admire the views from Mount Srđ
Take the cable car to the top of Mount Srđ to enjoy spectacular panoramic views of Dubrovnik, the Old Town, the islands and the Adriatic Sea.
The cable car is a seven minute walk from the harbour. Tickets are fairly expensive, even more so than for the cable car in Bergen, Norway. However, the journey is an experience in itself and saves valuable time, allowing you to see more during your romantic getaway in Dubrovnik.
At the summit, you can enjoy either a short nature walk or a longer hike. You can also visit the Homeland War Museum to learn about Dubrovnik’s history during the war of the 1990s, an extremely significant period in the life of this subsequently reconstructed city.
If you would rather not take the cable car or are afraid of heights, you can take bus 17 to Bosanka and then walk gently to the summit. After dinner, you can enjoy a digestive walk back down along the hiking trail.
This restaurant is an ideal place to enjoy dinner in an exceptional setting while watching the sunset over the city. Remember to book ahead and request a quiet table for two.
If you wish, you can choose our private “hybrid” guided tour, which combines the historic centre with Mount Srđ.
Explore the Love Stories Museum
The Love Stories Museum in Dubrovnik is a unique museum devoted to love and romance. Its collection includes objects, love letters, photographs and touching stories about love and relationships, making it an interesting romantic experience.
You will discover famous love stories, romantic accounts from different cultures and periods, and interactive exhibitions where you can share your own love story. The museum was created to inspire visitors and celebrate love in all its forms.
If you are looking for a romantic experience in Dubrovnik, the Love Stories Museum is a unique place to visit. It offers an opportunity to discover moving love stories and share a romantic moment with your partner.
Escape into nature
Located less than a ten minute walk from Pile Gate, Gradac Park is a peaceful clifftop park where you can enjoy a romantic walk in the shade of the trees.
The park also offers wonderful views of the sea, the city and Fort Lovrijenac. Find a bench and enjoy an intimate moment at a slower pace. It is also a lovely place from which to watch the sunset.
peaceful
The Lapad neighbourhood in Dubrovnik is considered romantic thanks to its peaceful atmosphere, seaside walks, picturesque beaches and charming cafés.
Stroll along the beautiful waterfront promenade and admire the magnificent views of the Adriatic Sea.
With its shady corners and lush vegetation, Lapad Park is a pleasant place for a romantic walk. It also has picnic areas where you can enjoy a relaxing break.
Several seafood restaurants can be found along the coast, offering panoramic views. The coastal path is illuminated at night, so you can take a digestive walk after dinner.
Find the best places to watch the sunset
Dubrovnik has several wonderful places from which to watch the sunset. Taking the cable car to the top of Mount Srđ provides magnificent views over the Old Town and the surrounding islands. The sunset from this height is spectacular, and you can even enjoy it over dinner.
Located just outside the Old Town walls, Fort Lovrijenac offers panoramic views of the Adriatic Sea and its islands. It is a romantic place from which to watch the sunset. As on Mount Srđ, you can admire it while dining beside the fortifications.
Just a five minute walk behind the fort lies Gradac Park, a delightful park that can be explored in about an hour and also offers beautiful views of the sea and sunset.
Although the city walls are generally closed in the evening, you can find viewpoints along them that are accessible during the day. These locations offer exceptional views over the city and sea.
Located near the Old Town, Banje Beach is a popular place to relax during the day. The sunset from Banje Beach is particularly picturesque.
The Jesuit Steps, located near the Church of Saint Ignatius, offer beautiful views over the Old Town. It is a peaceful place from which to enjoy the twilight.
Finally, as previously mentioned, some of Dubrovnik’s restaurants offer spectacular views of the sea and Old Town. We have selected several of them for a romantic dinner.
Booking a table at one of these restaurants will allow you to enjoy a romantic dining experience as the sun sets.
Explore Dubrovnik by night
Dubrovnik takes on an entirely new dimension after dark.
Dubrovnik’s city walls are even more impressive when illuminated by spotlights at night. Walk away from the historic centre to admire them from a distance.
The Old Town’s main street, Stradun, is lined with magnificent Baroque buildings. At night, it is illuminated by lanterns that create a romantic atmosphere, making it the perfect setting for an evening stroll.
Luža Square, in the heart of the Old Town, is beautifully illuminated at night. Sit at one of the cafés or restaurants surrounding the square and simply enjoy the atmosphere.
La fontaine d’Onofrio datant du XVe siècle est magnifiquement éclairée la nuit. Elle se trouve à l’entrée ouest de la vieille ville et constitue un point de repère intéressant.
The fifteenth century Onofrio’s Fountain is beautifully lit after dark. Located at the western entrance to the Old Town, it is an interesting landmark to visit.
Just outside the city walls, Fort Lovrijenac offers panoramic views over the Old Town. The city lights give this location an especially atmospheric feel. You can admire the view while dining on a restaurant terrace, such as those at Nautika or Dubravka 1836.
Dubrovnik’s harbour, with its moored boats and medieval façades in the background, is charming at night. Find a waterfront café and enjoy a relaxing evening.
Among the city’s religious and historic buildings, make sure you visit the Cathedral of the Assumption and Sponza Palace.
Located near the Church of Saint Ignatius, the Jesuit Steps offer magnificent views of the illuminated Old Town. It is a romantic place from which to enjoy the city at night.
More generally, explore the narrow and winding streets of the Old Town, where the subdued lighting creates an intimate atmosphere.
Where can you take a romantic excursion from Dubrovnik?
Explore the island of Lokrum
Lokrum lies just 600 metres from Dubrovnik and can be reached by boat from the Old Town harbour. The crossing is short and already provides beautiful views of Dubrovnik’s city walls from the sea.
This is no ordinary island. Lokrum is a protected nature reserve, and visitors must therefore pay an entrance fee for the privilege of exploring it.
Lokrum is a wooded island with lush vegetation, botanical gardens, peaceful paths and even a saltwater lake. It is a genuine haven where you can escape the bustle of the city and enjoy nature for half a day or even a full day.
One of Lokrum’s most notable attractions is its botanical garden, which contains a wide variety of exotic plants. The island is also home to a Benedictine monastery, adding a historic dimension to your visit. Explore the winding paths, discover secluded places to relax and enjoy panoramic views of the sea.
Near the monastery, you will find a small saltwater lake known as Mrtvo More, or the Dead Sea. Swimming is permitted, and you can float in its salty water for a unique and relaxing experience.
One of Lokrum’s more unusual features is its population of free roaming peacocks. These majestic birds add even more charm to the island’s atmosphere.
For a romantic getaway, Lokrum offers peaceful picnic spots, benches overlooking the sea and an overall atmosphere of tranquillity. Lose yourselves in the gardens, explore the historic ruins and simply appreciate the island’s natural beauty.
Visiting Lokrum from Dubrovnik is a popular excursion for travellers wishing to combine discovering the city with a peaceful escape to an enchanting island.
We offer a combined private guided tour including Dubrovnik’s Old Town and the island of Lokrum.
