Prepare yourself for a magical weekend where every moment is an invitation to wonder and complicity.
Malmö offers a refreshing and less conventional alternative to traditional romantic destinations, with its authentic charm, maritime landscapes, unusual places and many activities to share as a couple.
Finally, its proximity to Copenhagen, the Danish capital, makes it an ideal destination for a double City Break!
When is the best time for a romantic weekend in Malmö?
For a romantic weekend in Malmö, the best times to visit are spring, from April to June, and autumn, from September to October. During these seasons, the weather is generally pleasant, the parks and gardens are either in full bloom or covered in beautiful autumn colours, and the city is less crowded than in summer. You can make the most of outdoor walks, parks, café terraces and romantic activities without having to deal with large crowds.
You can also choose to visit during the second half of August, once Swedish children have returned to school. The final week of August is particularly enjoyable. However, bear in mind that the beaches can still be crowded at weekends, as Swedes understandably make the most of the summer weather.
How do you get to Malmö?
Travelling to Malmö in southern Sweden involves a rather amusing paradox. First, let’s go to Denmark! It may sound counterintuitive, a little like wanting to attend a party at your neighbour’s house but having to cross the house opposite first to find the right way in.
You can fly from Paris, Marseille or another international city to Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark. Air France, SAS and numerous other airlines operate flights to the Danish capital.
Once in Copenhagen, you may wonder: “But where is Malmö?” Do not worry, your adventure is only just beginning. You are now less than 30 minutes from Malmö, on the other side of the magnificent Øresund Bridge.
This bridge is a little like Aladdin’s magic carpet, only in a modern Nordic version. You can take a direct train from Copenhagen Airport to Malmö. The journey crosses the water and offers spectacular views. Do not forget to say “Hej” to the fish below.
And there you are, you have arrived in Malmö! You have crossed both a national border and a stretch of sea, hopefully with a smile still on your face. Malmö awaits you with its many charms, its parks and, of course, its famous Swedish meatballs.
Why travel via Denmark? Because it adds to the adventure, but also because it is usually the quickest and most convenient route. You can enjoy a short getaway in two different countries during the same trip. And let’s be honest, it makes a great story to tell your friends: “To get to Sweden, I went to Denmark first!”

What romantic things can you do during your stay in Malmö?
Discover Malmö and its secrets
Malmö is Sweden’s third-largest city after Stockholm and Gothenburg, and it has a great deal to offer. Although less ancient than many other European cities, Malmö was founded at the end of the 13th century. It originally belonged to Denmark before becoming part of Sweden in 1658.
The Old Town is packed with places to explore. To the west, you will find Malmö Castle, its windmill and the magnificent greenery surrounding it, while the historic heart of the city lies to the east.
Exploring the castle area can take several hours or even an entire day if you visit the different museums housed inside: the Malmö Art Museum or Malmö Konstmuseum, the City Museum, the Natural History Museum and the Technology and Maritime Museum, known as Teknikens och Sjöfartens hus.
The Old Town is full of surprises, including its main square, Stortorget, the delightful Lilla Torg with its half-timbered houses, the covered Malmö Saluhall food market, St Peter’s Church and many other sights that you can discover through the eyes of a local during our private guided tour.
Explore Malmö Castle and its museums
Malmö Castle, or Malmöhus Slott, is Malmö’s historic castle. Located to the west of the city centre and surrounded by a moat and beautiful gardens, this Renaissance castle was built during the 16th century and is one of the oldest surviving castles in Scandinavia.
The original Malmö Castle was built in 1434 by King Eric of Pomerania. It was rebuilt in the mid-16th century by King Christian III of Denmark, taking the form of a fortress whose architecture combines late Gothic and Renaissance styles. Over the centuries, the castle served as a royal residence, a prison and a military garrison. Today, it is an important cultural and historical centre.
It houses several fascinating museums, including the Malmö Art Museum, the Natural History Museum, the City Museum and the Science and Technology Museum. Together, they provide an excellent introduction to the history and culture of the city.
The castle is within easy walking distance of central Malmö and is also well served by public transport. Combined tickets for the different museums are available, offering a convenient and affordable way to discover everything that Malmöhus Slott has to offer.
Take a tour of Malmö’s canals
Did you know that Malmö’s Old Town, also known as Gamla Staden, is surrounded by picturesque canals that add another dimension to its historic charm? These canals are remnants of the city’s medieval defensive system and were once used to protect Malmö from invaders. Today, they offer visitors a peaceful and unusual way to discover the city.
While travelling along these waterways by boat, you can admire Malmö’s historic buildings from a new perspective, glide beneath old bridges and discover hidden corners that are often inaccessible on foot.
A boat trip along the canals reveals iconic landmarks such as the City Hall, the ramparts of Malmöhus Castle and the historic lighthouse in a different light, quite literally. The reflections of the buildings in the water, the changing light towards the end of the day and the tranquillity of the journey offer a unique perspective on the city.
Cruising along the canals is also a pleasant way to escape the urban bustle. Simply let yourself drift with the current while listening to local guides recount Malmö’s fascinating history. Combining history, culture and relaxation, it is an ideal complement to a guided walking tour.
Venture into the bohemian neighbourhood of Möllevången
Möllevången, often simply called “Möllan” by locals, is one of Malmö’s liveliest and most multicultural neighbourhoods. Situated in the southern part of the city, it is a genuine cultural melting pot where people from a wide variety of backgrounds live side by side.
Once a working-class district, Möllevången has preserved its authenticity while becoming a favourite destination among young people, artists and free spirits. The streets of Möllan are lively both day and night, with open-air markets, international grocery shops, alternative art galleries, theatres and live music venues that reflect the diversity of the local population.
The central square, Möllevångstorget, is the beating heart of the neighbourhood. During the day, it hosts a lively market where you can buy fresh produce, spices and specialities from around the world. In the evening, the square is transformed, surrounded by bars, cafés and restaurants serving a wide range of international cuisines. Murals and graffiti decorate the neighbourhood’s walls, reflecting the creative spirit that prevails here.
Möllevången perfectly embodies the soul of Malmö: multicultural, creative and resolutely alive. Do not limit your visit to the historic centre. Venture a little farther and discover this distinctive neighbourhood too.
Discover Swedish gastronomy
For a genuine introduction to Swedish cuisine in Malmö, do not miss three experiences that capture the gastronomic essence of the city: Malmö Saluhall, Fiskehoddorna and some of Malmö’s most romantic restaurants.
Malmö Saluhall is a modern food hall located inside a beautifully renovated industrial building, where you can enjoy a variety of fresh, high-quality dishes. This covered market is filled with stalls run by local producers offering everything from fresh seafood and artisan cheeses to delicate pastries and Swedish specialities. Food lovers can discover regional produce and sample dishes prepared on site. Whether you are looking for a quick lunch or a gourmet gift, Malmö Saluhall is an essential stop for exploring local flavours.
Not far away, you will find Fiskehoddorna, a collection of colourful wooden huts situated beside the canal, where fishermen sell their catch of the day. It is one of Malmö’s oldest fish markets and is perfect for anyone wishing to buy fresh fish, shellfish or prepared dishes made with locally caught seafood. Here you can try regional specialities such as pickled herring or smoked salmon while speaking directly to the fishermen who are keeping this centuries-old tradition alive.
For a romantic evening in Malmö, the city offers a wealth of intimate restaurants serving refined cuisine. Choose from establishments specialising in contemporary Swedish food, frequently prepared with local, seasonal ingredients and served in warm, elegant surroundings.
Whether you dine in a candlelit restaurant, on a terrace overlooking the canals or inside a historic vaulted cellar, these establishments create the perfect atmosphere for a memorable culinary experience. Many offer carefully designed tasting menus accompanied by thoughtfully selected wines. They are ideal for celebrating a special occasion or simply enjoying a romantic evening in a charming setting.

On summer evenings, Pildammsparken becomes even more magical, hosting open-air concerts and dance performances that create an enchanting atmosphere.
Folkets Park, whose name means “the People’s Park”, is one of Malmö’s most iconic and lively parks, with a rich history stretching back more than 130 years. Established in 1891, it is Sweden’s oldest people’s park and has played a central role in the city’s social and cultural life since its creation.
In summer, the park comes alive with concerts, outdoor film screenings and festivals, while in winter it is transformed with an ice-skating rink.
Malmö’s historic parks are not merely places in which to relax. They are also romantic havens where every corner offers opportunities to create unforgettable memories with your partner. Whether you come for a walk, a picnic or simply to admire the natural surroundings, Malmö’s parks promise moments filled with tranquillity and tenderness.

Designed by Danish architectural firm Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects, Malmö Live is much more than a cultural venue. It is an architectural landmark combining modernity, functionality and Scandinavian elegance, making it an essential destination for anyone interested in design and music.
Inaugurated in 2015, this multifunctional complex blends seamlessly into Malmö’s urban landscape, connecting the historic centre with the modern district of Västra Hamnen. Its minimalist, streamlined design is characterised by geometric forms and the use of glass, steel and concrete, giving the complex a restrained and elegant appearance.
Inspired by the city’s skyline, the building consists of several interconnected volumes that fit harmoniously together, creating a genuine “city within the city”. Inside, the use of materials such as wood adds warmth and comfort while optimising the acoustics for musical performances.

Stroll through Västra Hamnen
The Malmö Titanic Lovelock Point is a romantic place to discover together. Inspired by the film “Titanic”, this viewpoint is popular with couples who attach love locks to its railings as a symbol of their lasting love, following a tradition similar to the one once associated with the Pont des Arts in Paris.
It is a romantic spot offering beautiful views over the Øresund, particularly at sunset. Combine your visit with a walk along the waterfront promenade and a stop beside the Turning Torso. This architectural landmark is one of Scandinavia’s best-known skyscrapers, and its distinctive twisting design makes it an essential sight for architecture enthusiasts.
Relax at the beach!
Relax by the sea in Malmö and enjoy the magnificent Ribersborg Beach, affectionately known as “Ribban” by locals. This long stretch of sand, situated close to the city centre, is the perfect place to unwind beside the water. Ribban offers calm, shallow water that is ideal for swimming, as well as picnic areas, playgrounds and barbecue facilities.

Admire the sunset over the Øresund
Admiring the sunset over the Øresund is a magical experience that transforms the landscape into a canvas of vibrant colours. As the sun slowly sinks towards the horizon, the calm waters of the strait take on shades of gold, pink and orange, creating a breathtaking natural spectacle.

Whether you are alone or in good company, a sunset over the Øresund will remain one of the most poetic memories of your stay in Malmö.
Explore Malmö by night
We often say it, but exploring a city at night is a completely different experience that reveals new perspectives. Discover another side of Malmö after dark, when every corner is transformed into an illuminated picture.
Visit the old lighthouse or the City Hall, where the beautifully illuminated Renaissance architecture evokes a sense of grandeur and nostalgia. Wander across Lilla Torg with its delightful half-timbered houses, or admire Malmöhus Castle, which takes on an almost mystical appearance in the moonlight.
A little farther away, continue to Västra Hamnen to admire the Turning Torso, then walk along the waterfront towards Ribersborg Beach.
Where can you take a romantic excursion outside Malmö?
