Romantic Getaway Prague

Prague: a romantic escape in the heart of Europe

Treat yourself and get away more often!

Prague

Prague, the imperial capital of the Czech Republic, is located in the heart of Europe, in the historic region of Bohemia. With its rich heritage, medieval charm, cobbled streets, historic buildings and countless churches, the city is a magnificent destination for a romantic getaway.

You could spend an entire year photographing its countless spires. It is no coincidence that Prague is known as the City of a Hundred Spires or the City of a Hundred Towers.

Escape the tourist crowds and discover some of Prague’s more intimate corners, where you can share unforgettable moments with the person you love.

When is the best time to visit Prague for a romantic getaway?

Prague saisons

Prague attracts large numbers of visitors, particularly during peak tourist season. For a more intimate experience, consider visiting outside the busiest summer months.

June and September offer pleasant weather and fewer tourists, creating an ideal setting for a romantic escape.

Prague’s winter atmosphere, with snow and festive lights, also gives the city a fairytale feel, especially after dark.

Before you leave, remember that Prague is not in the eurozone and that the official currency is the Czech koruna. If you do not want to worry about exchange rates when paying in cash, you can of course pay by debit or credit card, which is widely accepted. You may not even need to use any Czech currency during your stay.

How do you reach the city centre from Prague Airport?

Several transport options are available to reach central Prague from Václav Havel Airport:

By bus:

  • Bus 119: This popular route takes you to Nádraží Veleslavín station in around 15 minutes, where you can take Metro Line A, the green line, into the city centre.
  • Bus 100: This bus takes you to Zličín station on Metro Line B, the yellow line.
  • Bus 191: This route runs directly to Na Knížecí station and is particularly convenient for reaching Smíchov. Tickets for these buses cost around €1.20.

Other bus options:

  • Airport Express: More expensive than the standard public buses but cheaper than some other alternatives, it provides a dedicated service between the airport and the city centre.
  • RegioJet buses: These buses travel from Karlovy Vary, stop at the airport and continue to Florenc Bus Station in Prague. The fare is approximately €4.30 and the direct journey takes around 15 minutes. A rather convenient option.

By taxi:

  • A taxi journey to central Prague takes around 30 to 35 minutes and costs approximately €30.

Once there, Prague offers an efficient public transport network of buses, trams and metro services. For a romantic escape, however, walking remains the best way to explore the city. Many attractions are within walking distance, allowing you to wander hand in hand through picturesque streets. Taxis and public transport are also available for longer journeys.

Where should you stay in Prague for a romantic atmosphere?

Choosing the right neighbourhood can considerably influence the atmosphere of your getaway. Malá Strana, the district beneath Prague Castle, has a particularly romantic feel, with its cobbled streets, picturesque squares and magnificent views over the city. Hotels and apartments in this neighbourhood often have plenty of charm.

The areas surrounding Prague Castle and Vyšehrad Castle, on the opposite side of the Vltava, also make excellent bases from which to explore historic Prague.

For a slightly unusual and particularly romantic stay, you can also choose accommodation at the top of Petřín Hill. The park is popular with both locals and visitors, wonderfully romantic and home to our suggested accommodation offering magnificent views across the city.

Experience the authentic romantic side of Prague

Visite guidée romantique Prague

Prague is an excellent destination for a romantic weekend. Several neighbourhoods exude a romantic atmosphere, including the highly visited historic centre, the popular Castle District and Malá Strana.

The city also hides some quieter gems, which we invite you to discover during a special private guided tour designed for couples.

This tour was specially created to offer a romantic introduction to Prague away from the most obvious tourist routes. It begins at Strahov Monastery, at the top of Petřín Hill, and ends near the famous 14th-century Charles Bridge.

Explore the history and grounds of Prague Castle

Château de Prague

Begin your romantic adventure with a visit to Prague Castle, the former Royal Palace and one of the city’s essential landmarks. Visit towards the end of the day in autumn or outside peak season to enjoy its magical atmosphere without the crowds.

During summer and other particularly busy periods, however, you should not expect it to be a peaceful haven: the largest castle complex in Czechia is extremely popular and attracts large numbers of visitors.

Explore the Deer Moat, known as Jelení příkop in Czech, a green park in the castle’s former defensive moat. It offers peaceful walks through shaded woodland and alongside the Brusnice Stream. You may hear the crowds crossing the footbridge above you, but down in the park you can enjoy a much quieter atmosphere away from the masses.

If you would like to learn more about this Czech treasure, why not choose an intimate private guided tour? You will discover the history of this iconic castle, explore its courtyards and Golden Lane and have the opportunity to ask all the questions you want.

Wander through picturesque Nový Svět

Novy Svet

Stroll along Nový Svět, a picturesque street in the Prague Castle district offering beautiful views from the top of the hill.

Its colourful houses, many of which were originally built for castle workers, combined with its narrow, winding cobbled lanes, create an especially romantic atmosphere.

Discover Petřín Park, an oasis of tranquillity

Colline de Pétrin

Located south of Prague Castle, Petřín Park can be reached on foot or via the funicular from Malá Strana below.

Lose yourselves among the many paths of Petřín Park, which is particularly peaceful on weekdays. Admire the panoramic views across the city from Petřín Tower and soak up the park’s romantic atmosphere while discovering the many things there are to see and do.

Prague residents observe a wonderfully romantic tradition every 1 May: placing lilac in front of the statue of the poet Karel Hynek Mácha and sharing a kiss.

The park can be explored in any season, each offering its own particular charm, and is beautiful both during the day and after dark. If you time your visit to coincide with sunset, why not sit out on a terrace and enjoy a refreshing Czech beer while admiring the magical views from the hillside—or even book a table at the restaurant?

Explore the charming district of Malá Strana

Malá Strana is an elongated neighbourhood on the left bank of the river, stretching alongside the Vltava from just south of Prague Castle to the Smíchov district.

Wander hand in hand through the cobbled streets of Malá Strana. Its little picturesque squares, colourful houses and small churches create an intimate atmosphere that is perfect for couples.

Discover the Lennon Wall, located close to Charles Bridge. The wall is covered in graffiti and messages, many of which are devoted to peace and love.

You can also explore the magnificent Baroque Vrtba Garden, which offers remarkable views over Prague. This peaceful spot is perfect for a relaxing break.

Take romantic photographs beside the Čertovka Canal

Certovka

The Čertovka Canal, a narrow waterway often described as Prague’s “Little Venice”, is a charming place for a peaceful walk. Its banks, lined with colourful houses, create an intimate atmosphere and provide a lovely backdrop for souvenir photographs.

Visit Prague’s small islands

Alongside Malá Strana, Prague has four islands in the Vltava, offering picturesque surroundings that are ideal for peaceful romantic walks. Choose one or two to experience Prague from a different perspective: Žofín, Střelecký, Kampa and Dětský.

Ile Kampa

Žofín is an island in the Vltava best known for the palace of the same name, an important historic and cultural venue. In the evening, the area can be beautifully illuminated.

Located in the middle of the Vltava, Střelecký Island offers panoramic views of Prague’s main landmarks. Take a walk along its riverbanks and admire Prague Castle, Charles Bridge and other iconic sights.

Kampa is a small island connected to the riverbank by a bridge. There is plenty to see, including its park, the Kampa Museum, charming cafés and restaurants and beautiful views of Prague Castle.

Although smaller, Dětský Island is often less busy, giving it a more intimate atmosphere.

Take a cruise along the Vltava

You can cruise along the Thames in London, the Seine in Paris, the Arno in Florence and the Grand Canal in Venice.

In Prague, let the waters of the Vltava carry you through the city on a relaxing cruise. Choose a sunrise or evening cruise to admire Prague’s shimmering lights from a unique perspective.

Enjoy breathtaking views from Letná Park

Head north to Letná Park, where the terrace offers breathtaking views across the city. It is a genuine balcony overlooking Prague. Enjoy a peaceful moment while admiring the panorama or take a seat on a café terrace.

Discover the urban vineyard at Viniční Altán

Vignobles Prague

Explore the Viniční Altán vineyard, located close to Letná Park, for a romantic escape among the vines. Taste local wines while enjoying the tranquillity of this charming place.

Explore the Vyšehrad Citadel

For an alternative to Prague Castle on the right bank of the river, visit the Vyšehrad Citadel, a small town within the city. Discover its lovely park, picturesque cemetery, magnificent basilica, small museum, beautiful views across Prague and excellent places to eat.

Take a necro-romantic walk through Olšany Cemetery

For an unusual experience, take a necro-romantic walk through Olšany Cemetery. Some readers may find this suggestion rather strange, but we can assure you that this collection of historic cemeteries is well worth the journey.

The walk leading to the cemetery is particularly pleasant, passing through streets lined with Art Nouveau architecture. If you can, be sure to stop at the Church of St Ludmila along the way.

This peaceful place has a beautifully melancholic atmosphere, with historic graves, artists’ tombs and shaded avenues. It is especially beautiful in autumn, when the trees are filled with colour.

Experience a symphony of love at the Prague Opera

Attend an opera in Prague for an elegant and cultural evening. If you are lucky enough to find a performance of L’elisir d’amore, let yourself be carried away by the magic of this love story, just as we were during a performance at the Vienna State Opera. A magical experience.

If opera is not for you, Prague offers numerous opportunities to attend classical concerts in extraordinary venues such as the Spanish Synagogue, the Mirror Chapel and the Church of St Salvator.

Admire the sunset over Prague

Experiencing Prague at sunset is captivating, transforming the city into a living picture bathed in warm, golden shades.

For spectacular views, head to Petřín Hill and settle on the terrace of a restaurant overlooking the rooftops of the Old Town, Charles Bridge and the Vltava River.

The Petřín Gardens, scattered with romantic statues and majestic trees, provide an idyllic setting from which to watch the colourful spectacle as the sun slowly disappears below the horizon.

Another excellent option is Letná Park, set on a hill opposite Prague Castle. From here, you can watch the sun set behind the castle’s iconic silhouette and admire beautiful views of the urban vineyards as the city gradually begins to glow.

Whichever location you choose, Prague at sunset offers a magical and romantic experience that captures the very essence of this historic city.

Experience Prague’s lights after dark

Prague by night

End your stay in style by discovering Prague at night. To capture the illuminated splendour of the city, head to Prague Castle. Perched on Hradčany Hill, the castle provides panoramic views of the Old Town and Charles Bridge, both beautifully illuminated at night.

Then descend towards the Vltava and find a good viewpoint beside the river, such as Na Františku Embankment, where you can admire the shimmering reflections of the city lights on the water. Why not also consider a night-time cruise along the Vltava to see Prague’s sparkling lights from the river?

Continue your evening walk towards the Čertovka Canal and Old Town Square, where the Astronomical Clock and medieval buildings glow beneath warm lights.

End your evening on Charles Bridge, an iconic setting where romantic lanterns mingle with the stars to create an enchanting atmosphere. Let yourself be captivated by the magic of illuminated Prague, where every street corner reveals another facet of this historic city.

Where can couples take a romantic day trip outside Prague?

Visit Karlštejn Castle

Château de Karlštejn

Karlštejn Castle, founded in 1348 by Emperor Charles IV, is an important historic site located around 30 kilometres southwest of Prague. The journey takes approximately one hour and 15 minutes by train, followed by a 35-minute walk. Alternatively, you can take a local taxi from Karlštejn station.

Built in the Gothic style, the castle was designed to house the crown jewels and sacred relics. The Great Tower, at the heart of the castle, was the principal location in which these treasures were kept. Karlštejn also served as Charles IV’s summer residence.

Several visitor routes allow you to explore areas including the Great Tower, the Chapel of the Holy Cross and the Knights’ Hall. The surrounding countryside also offers picturesque hiking trails, allowing you to enjoy nature while discovering this historic site.

Explore the town of Kutná Hora

The journey from Prague to Kutná Hora takes around one hour and 30 minutes, travelling by train to Kolín before continuing by bus for approximately 30 minutes.
