Aveiro, Set Sail for the Portuguese Venice

Treat yourself and travel more often!

Aveiro, located in Portugal’s Central Region, is often nicknamed the “Venice of Portugal” thanks to its picturesque canals lined with colourful houses and crossed by moliceiros, the city’s traditional boats. Although smaller and less famous than Lisbon or Porto, Aveiro has a unique charm that attracts travellers looking for authenticity and romance. Easily accessible from both major cities, it is the perfect destination for a long romantic weekend, a twin-city break, or even a one-week holiday in Portugal.

Aveiro is a city where history, culture and nature blend harmoniously. Yet many visitors only spend half a day here, believing its canals and Art Nouveau buildings can be explored in just a few hours. That impression is misleading, as Aveiro has far more treasures than first meet the eye.

Photomotage Aveiro

With its peaceful streets, nearby beaches, lively markets and delicious local cuisine, Aveiro deserves much more than a brief stopover. Take the time to stroll along the canals, taste local specialities such as ovos moles, and soak up the gentle, romantic atmosphere of this unique city.

How to get to Aveiro?

The quickest and most convenient way to reach Aveiro from France is to take a direct flight to Porto, then continue by train, coach or car. Lisbon is also a good alternative if you cannot find a direct flight to Porto.

Aveiro is then just 40 minutes by train from Porto’s Campanhã Station or around 1 hour by coach. As soon as you arrive, your romantic getaway begins! Aveiro’s railway station is not just a transport hub, but a tourist attraction in its own right.

Aveiro railway station was inaugurated in 1864, but it was the 1916 extension that gave the building its current appearance. The station façade is covered with more than 1,500 azulejos, the hand-painted ceramic tiles that tell stories through their blue and white motifs. Created by the artist Francisco Pereira and produced at the Fábrica da Fonte Nova in Aveiro, these panels depict scenes from everyday life in the Aveiro region, local landscapes, and elements of Portuguese history and culture. It is one of the finest examples of traditional Portuguese azulejo art.
