Choose the season that best suits your preferences, whether you want to enjoy nature, explore the local history or simply relax in a romantic setting.

How to get to Beaufort

Like Echternach, Luxembourg’s oldest town, located a little further south, Beaufort lies in the Müllerthal region. Also known as Luxembourg’s “Little Switzerland”, this beautiful area offers unique landscapes amid unspoilt nature.

Unless you live in Luxembourg or close to the border in Germany, Belgium or France, you are unlikely to visit Beaufort as a standalone destination. Instead, you can combine it with Luxembourg City, the country’s capital, or other beautiful and picturesque towns such as Vianden and Clervaux to the north or Echternach to the south.

For example, you could spend a few days exploring Luxembourg City before continuing your trip in Luxembourg’s Little Switzerland.

This is also convenient from a practical point of view, as there is a direct bus from Luxembourg City to Echternach. From Echternach, bus 191 will take you directly to Beaufort.

Which cosy and romantic accommodation should you choose in Beaufort?

When planning a romantic weekend in Beaufort, remember that this is a small village. Choosing the right accommodation is therefore important if you want to enjoy your stay, however short it may be.

We have selected three very different, high-quality places to stay. We clearly have a favourite—we are not going to pretend otherwise—but we will let you discover the different options we have chosen so that you can make up your own mind.

What to see and do during a romantic weekend in Beaufort

Beaufort is a charming village located in Luxembourg’s Müllerthal region. This area is often nicknamed “Luxembourg’s Little Switzerland” because of its picturesque landscapes and natural beauty. Beaufort stands out for its rolling countryside, spectacular rock formations and lush forests.

The village of Beaufort is particularly famous for its magnificent castle, Beaufort Castle, whose origins date back to the 11th century. The ruins of this medieval castle offer an impressive glimpse into the region’s past. Visitors can explore the remains of the castle, wander through its picturesque surroundings and learn more about its fascinating history.

In addition to its castle, Beaufort offers hiking trails through the surrounding countryside, giving nature-loving couples the opportunity to explore the varied landscapes of the Müllerthal region. Unique rock formations, winding streams and panoramic views make every hike a memorable experience.

The village itself is picturesque, with traditional stone houses and a peaceful atmosphere. You can stroll along its narrow streets, discover local shops and enjoy the authentic ambience of the Luxembourg countryside.

Explore the history of Beaufort’s two castles

Beaufort Medieval Castle

Beaufort’s medieval castle is an architectural gem dating back to the 11th century. Unlike most castles, it is not perched on top of a hill but stands below the village of Beaufort. Its history dates back to the Counts of Beaufort, a noble family that left its mark on the region.

Château médiéval Beaufort

Although partially in ruins, Beaufort’s medieval castle remains extremely impressive, with its towers, ramparts and rooms bearing witness to the Middle Ages. Once inside, you may want to sit on one of the stone benches in the castle grounds and imagine everyday life at the time, even though the castle is not furnished.

If you would like to learn more, you can opt for a one-hour guided tour with commentary.

Beaufort Renaissance Castle

Located immediately beside the medieval castle, Beaufort’s Renaissance castle offers a striking contrast. Built in the 17th century, it features more elaborate architecture and artistic details characteristic of the Renaissance period.

Its history is directly connected to the medieval castle, but we will not reveal any more so as not to spoil the story for you.

The rooms of Beaufort’s Renaissance castle are richly decorated and reflect the aesthetics of the period. Above all, the castle is exceptionally well preserved, as it remained inhabited until 2012. The gardens surrounding the castle add an elegant touch to this historical experience. As you stroll through the formal gardens, you can appreciate the artistic and architectural influence of the Renaissance.

Exploring these two castles gives you an opportunity to compare and understand the differences between the medieval and Renaissance periods in Luxembourg. It is an educational and immersive experience that will transport you through the centuries and reveal the fascinating layers of Luxembourg’s history.

Enjoy a romantic candlelit dinner for two

Just as there are not many loverooms in Beaufort, restaurants with a genuinely romantic atmosphere are also few and far between.

There are several restaurants within the village that you can reach without taking a bus. As you know, this is precisely what we promote on Go-Citybreak.love: travelling with as little reliance on cars as possible and choosing more environmentally responsible ways of getting around.

You can, of course, choose any of these restaurants. However, the only one with a truly romantic feeling is located on Grand-Rue, heading north, just beyond the Um Bierg campsite.

Restaurant Meyer à Beaufort

It serves beautifully presented gourmet cuisine and offers several very affordable set menus, including one featuring Luxembourg specialities—something surprisingly rare in Luxembourg. You can choose between the restaurant and its modern brasserie. Please note that it generally closes for the winter season in early November and reopens towards the end of March.

Discover the Natur- & Geopark Mëllerdall

In Beaufort, you are not simply staying anywhere in Luxembourg. The village lies within a protected nature park, and since 2022, the Natur- & Geopark Mëllerdall—Mëllerdall in Luxembourgish and Müllerthal in German—has been part of the UNESCO Global Geoparks international network.

Start by visiting the Natur- & Geopark Mëllerdall when it opens at 10 a.m. for an introduction to the region’s natural environment and its unique rock formations.

Geopark Müllerthal

The organisation presents a free exhibition in the former youth hostel at 6 Rue de l’Auberge. Allow between 45 minutes and one hour to make the most of the exhibition and read the explanations.

The exhibition explains the history of the region and how its rocks were formed over millions of years during the Triassic and Jurassic periods. These include Luxembourg Sandstone, which is around 200 million years old. The exhibition is both interactive and educational.

After visiting the exhibition, we suggest taking an easy four-kilometre walk nearby to work up an appetite.

Take a short exploratory walk in the surrounding countryside

The shortest hiking trail accessible from the village is the B16 trail. At 4.3 kilometres long, it is very easy to complete.

It is the short green walk shown on this map, which features numerous possible hikes around Beaufort. Some sections form part of the famous Müllerthal Trail.

Set off on a romantic nature hike

Beaufort lies in the very heart of the Müllerthal region and therefore offers numerous walks and hikes through the countryside, with a wide variety of magnificent landscapes to discover.

Here are three different hikes to enjoy during your romantic weekend in Beaufort.

Discover the former sandstone quarry and its history

Starting once again in the centre of Beaufort, set off to explore the former sandstone quarry. This route is known as the Mensch und Stein educational trail. It is a six-kilometre circular walk that takes approximately two hours and is relatively easy to complete. It is perfect for a morning excursion, particularly if you would then like to enjoy the local cuisine and relax over lunch in a restaurant.

For almost a century, from 1835 until the beginning of the 20th century, Beaufort’s sandstone quarry was a major industrial site that helped shape the local economy. The sandstone extracted here was highly valued as a construction material and contributed to the development of the region. The impact of this activity remains visible in the vast excavations, which now offer visitors an immersive insight into the region’s industrial history.

The history of the site reveals the quarry’s economic importance, as it created jobs and attracted specialised workers. The extracted sandstone also left its mark on local architecture, giving the buildings a distinctive appearance.

Carte carrière de grès

With its steep rock walls and extraction basins, the quarry offers a journey through the region’s industrial history. Visitors can follow the trails to discover the different stages of the extraction process while observing the impact of human activity on the landscape.

After decades of industrial use, the quarry has found a new life as a natural habitat. Its rock walls have become nesting sites for birds of prey, while vegetation has colonised the formerly excavated areas, creating a haven for a variety of insects, reptiles and mammals.

The quarry’s transformation into a sanctuary for flora and fauna highlights the importance of conservation. Raising public awareness of the ecological value of sites like this helps to preserve their habitats while creating a balance between past human activity and the constantly evolving natural environment. Beaufort’s sandstone quarry is therefore an excellent example of how nature can flourish among the traces left by human activity, offering an immersive experience that combines industrial history with natural beauty.

Take a longer romantic hike around Beaufort

Follow the B1 trail, a longer hike lasting more than three hours around Beaufort. It will therefore take up a good half-day of your romantic weekend. The route is moderately difficult, so we recommend wearing proper walking shoes rather than lightweight city trainers. Some sections may also become slippery after rain.

You could bring a picnic and enjoy an intimate lunch for two in a peaceful natural setting towards the end of the route.

Randonnée B1

Alternatively, enjoy a lie-in and make the most of your accommodation, particularly if you have chosen one with a swimming pool. You can then set off in the middle of the morning, have a picnic surrounded by nature at lunchtime and complete the hike after lunch.

Randonnée B1

The trail ends at the car park beside the two castles. If you plan your day carefully, you can visit both castles immediately afterwards. Allow at least two hours to enjoy them properly without rushing. Remember that the Renaissance castle can only be visited by prior reservation, so plan ahead and book the 4 p.m. tour.

This circular hiking trail offers magnificent scenery, with highlights including the Beaufort plateau, the Birkbaach and Herkuleskapp rock formations and the picturesque Halerbaach valley. This nature walk is certain to impress you.

Walk along wild and romantic streams

While visiting the castles, you will notice a river flowing nearby. Take a walk beside the picturesque Haupeschbaach and Halerbaach streams to learn about the history of Beaufort’s former mills and discover the local flora and fauna.

This trail is marked with a fossilised oyster symbol known as the “devil’s claw”.

The suggested route starts at the castle and follows the Haupeschbaach and Halerbaach streams through the forest before returning to the castle.

Randonnée Haupeschbaach et Halerbaach

It is a picturesque trail featuring small wooden bridges and miniature waterfalls. You will walk through lush vegetation and pass enormous rock formations.

The route is clearly marked on this map.

This easy four-kilometre trail is perfect before or after visiting the castles. Allow around two hours for the walk and remember to take the castle opening times into account, particularly as the Renaissance castle can only be visited as part of a guided tour.

Explore Beaufort at night

Château Beaufort by night

You may have visited the medieval castle during the day, but it takes on a completely different appearance after dark. Unlike other destinations with numerous illuminated attractions, Beaufort’s castles—and the medieval castle in particular—steal the show at night.

Walk down to the castle through the village’s narrow streets and soak up an atmosphere that is mysterious, peaceful and soothing all at once. Everyone will experience something different while admiring this imposing castle at night.

Where can you go on a romantic day trip from Beaufort?

Schiessentümpel

For a nature excursion, head to one of the most iconic places in both the Müllerthal region and Luxembourg: the Schiessentümpel waterfall, located approximately ten kilometres away. However, the journey takes more than an hour by public transport and requires two buses.

Visit the fairytale castle town of Vianden

Vianden

Nestled in the picturesque Luxembourg Ardennes, Vianden is a historical gem on the banks of the River Our. Dominated by its imposing hilltop castle, this charming medieval town invites visitors to travel back in time as they wander through its cobbled streets and admire its half-timbered houses.

Discover Luxembourg’s oldest town

Echternach

Using public transport, an easier excursion is to visit the capital of Luxembourg’s Little Switzerland: Echternach. Bus 191 leaves Beaufort every hour and will take you there in approximately 20 minutes, making the journey both quick and convenient.

You can also travel directly to Diekirch in around 30 minutes, again using bus 191.

From the ruins of its medieval castle to the lush landscapes that invite you to escape from everyday life, this small Luxembourg village offers an authentic and memorable experience. Immerse yourselves in its fascinating past, explore its picturesque hiking trails and enjoy the tranquillity of the verdant countryside.
