Gozo, Malta’s charming sister island, offers a unique culinary experience infused with Mediterranean flavours and local traditions. Gozitan cuisine celebrates fresh local ingredients, featuring seafood, island-grown vegetables, regional cheeses and excellent local wines.
If you’re looking for a romantic dining experience in Victoria, Gozo’s capital, or elsewhere on the island, you’ll find plenty of authentic restaurants offering intimate settings and delicious cuisine. Some boast spectacular sea views or overlook Gozo’s picturesque countryside, adding an extra touch of romance to your evening.
Whether you prefer enjoying fresh seafood in an elegant setting, discovering traditional Gozitan dishes in a charming restaurant tucked away in the old town, or dining on a panoramic terrace under the stars, Gozo offers unforgettable experiences for every couple.
Wander through the charming streets of Victoria and explore the island’s hidden gems to discover restaurants combining authentic local cuisine with a wonderfully romantic atmosphere.
The Roof Il Hagar
We discovered a true hidden gem for you… a rather secret spot tucked away on the rooftop of a museum!
From this rooftop terrace you’ll enjoy spectacular views over St George’s Basilica and the Citadel.
It’s the perfect place for a romantic evening, sipping a glass of local wine or a craft beer while sharing a platter of Gozitan or Italian specialities with your loved one.
Arrive early to secure one of the best tables with a view.
Café Jubilée
Finding genuinely romantic restaurants in this price range isn’t always easy, as romantic dining is often associated with fine dining and higher budgets.
However, Café Jubilee is a charming, relaxed venue that’s perfect for an affordable romantic dinner. Ask for a table away from the bar if you’d like a little more privacy.
Enjoy Mediterranean and traditional Gozitan cuisine in the warm atmosphere of a character-filled bistro, all at very reasonable prices.
One thing we particularly love is their generous sharing platters featuring local cheeses, cured meats, fresh fish and other regional delicacies for around €25. They’re perfect for sharing while keeping both your appetite and your budget happy.
Brookies Restaurant
Brookies Restaurant is an excellent choice for a romantic meal together.
Choose between a candlelit dinner inside the beautiful vaulted stone dining room with its fireplace, or enjoy lunch on the stunning open-air terrace during the warmer months. Whatever the season, this restaurant never disappoints.
The dishes are delicious, prepared using the freshest ingredients and cooked with genuine care. We highly recommend the goat’s cheese and truffle panzerotti. You’ll also find a wide selection of meat, seafood, pasta and risotto dishes, ensuring there’s something for everyone.
Maldonado Bistro
Located in a charming medieval alleyway, this restaurant stole our hearts before we even stepped inside.
Its welcoming entrance is already full of character, before leading downstairs into intimate stone dining rooms that couldn’t be more romantic.
The cuisine offers something a little different from the more traditional Maltese restaurants, and you’ll undoubtedly fall in love with both the atmosphere and the menu.
Depending on the season, you may enjoy locally line-caught grouper fished around the reefs of Cominotto Island. The carefully curated wine list features both local and international labels to complement your meal.
With attentive yet relaxed service, everything is in place for a wonderful romantic evening.
Restaurant Ta’ Rikardu
Ta’ Rikardu is located in a narrow street immediately to the left of the cathedral as you face it.
While it may not be the most romantic restaurant in our selection, it certainly offers beautiful views. Set inside a medieval building, it serves traditional Maltese cuisine at very reasonable prices.
Start by sharing a traditional Maltese platter, followed by homemade ravioli with a variety of fillings or the famous Aljotta, Malta’s delicious garlic fish soup. For your main course, try the rabbit stew or roasted goat, two authentic local specialties.
The rooftop terrace offers lovely panoramic views, and complimentary Wi-Fi is available.
La Vallée
Located south of Victoria inside the Cesca Boutique Hotel, La Vallée is one of Gozo’s finest gourmet restaurants.
It’s easily reached with a pleasant 20-minute walk from Victoria’s centre, by bus 330 in around 10 minutes, or by bus 306, which passes through Il Munxar and the charming harbour of Xlendi before arriving at the restaurant—a scenic journey in itself.
The menu features creative dishes that go beyond the classics, including seasonal game such as pheasant roulade or wild boar fillet. We also recommend trying the duck croquettes or the melt-in-your-mouth pork cheek ravioli with Gorgonzola or lobster.
To complete the experience, you’ll dine overlooking the breathtaking valley from which the restaurant takes its name.
While Victoria is the heart of Gozo and the island’s main transport hub, some of the most romantic restaurants are actually located elsewhere on the island. Here are our favourites.
The View Bar
Located just north of Victoria, the photos speak for themselves. This rooftop restaurant boasts spectacular panoramic views over Gozo’s rolling countryside and hills.
Time your reservation well and you’ll also enjoy one of the island’s most beautiful sunsets.
The restaurant serves generous modern Mediterranean cuisine combining Maltese culinary traditions with fresh local ingredients. The colourful menu offers plenty of original dishes to choose from.
Don’t miss the cocktails—they’re one of the house specialties.
Il Kartell
Located close to the Marsalforn salt pans, Il Kartell celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2023 and has won numerous awards over the years.
In 2023 it was once again named Best Value Restaurant in Gozo and Malta.
Facing the sea, with breathtaking waterfront views, it’s one of Gozo’s top seafood restaurants, renowned for its generous and delicious sharing platters.
Book well in advance and request a table right by the water. The elegant vaulted dining room also provides a wonderfully romantic setting for lunch or dinner.
Arzella Restaurant
Still in Marsalforn, we’ve found what may be the best table on the island for a romantic dinner—the corner table overlooking the sea.
Time your meal to coincide with sunset and you’ll enjoy one of the most romantic evenings imaginable.
The menu offers a wide selection of fresh seafood, along with salads, risottos, pasta dishes and meat options.
If you want the very best table on the terrace, be sure to reserve ahead.
The Boathouse
Located in the picturesque harbour of Xlendi in southern Gozo, The Boathouse is one of the island’s most popular restaurants.
Its owner is former Maltese footballer Joseph Attard, and the restaurant is a favourite with both locals and visitors throughout the year.
People come here for the unbeatable waterfront location, the lively atmosphere and, above all, the excellent food. The signature dish is the traditional Gozitan fish soup, Aljotta, which is absolutely worth trying.
Country Terrace
Yes, you’ll have to make a little effort to reach this restaurant, but once you’re seated on its panoramic terrace, enjoying one of the most breathtaking views on the island, you’ll understand why it’s worth the trip.
Overlooking the harbour, the marina, Fort Chambray and the islands of Comino, Cominotto and Malta, the scenery is simply spectacular by day or by night.
Even if you’re travelling on a budget, treat yourselves by sharing a seafood platter or a selection of local specialties. Pasta dishes are also reasonably priced. Despite its exceptional location, this is a mid-range restaurant rather than a luxury establishment.
To make things even better, Country Terrace regularly wins culinary awards and is one of our favourite romantic restaurants in Gozo.
One80 au Marina Yacht Club
If you’d rather avoid the climb to Country Terrace, One80 is conveniently located down by the marina in Mgarr Harbour.
The concept is simple: order individual dishes or choose several plates to share together. Every dish is available in three different sizes, making it perfect for a tapas-style dining experience.
The menu includes fresh seafood, shellfish platters, burgers, pasta, risotto and an excellent selection of vegetarian dishes, ensuring everyone finds something they love.
Tmun
This family-run restaurant first opened in Xlendi in 1987 before moving to Mgarr Harbour, allowing the freshest fish to travel directly from the fishing boat to your plate.
Chef Paul, who took over the kitchen from his mother, has created an imaginative menu with exotic influences that delights both the eyes and the palate.
You can dine à la carte or opt for the restaurant’s innovative sharing menu, perfectly suited to today’s trend of enjoying several gourmet dishes together.
Choose between 7, 9 or 12 sharing plates, with prices starting from €110 per couple. Please note that this tasting experience is only served until 1:00 pm for lunch and 9:00 pm for dinner, ensuring every table receives impeccable service.
The extensive international wine list also includes excellent local wines, while wines by the glass remain very reasonably priced.
Ta’ Frenc
Located in the village of Xaghra, close to the Ġgantija Megalithic Temples, Ta’ Frenc is the perfect place to combine sightseeing with an exceptional meal.
You can visit the temples in the morning before lunch, or spend the afternoon exploring them before returning for a romantic dinner.
The restaurant even welcomed Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie during the filming of By the Sea, written and directed by Angelina Jolie in 2015.
Choose from the à la carte menu or one of the three tasting menus featuring 3, 5 or 9 courses. The beautiful presentation of every dish explains why reservations are so highly sought after.
If you dine à la carte, don’t miss the crêpes, which are flambéed and prepared right beside your table.
Gozo Picnic
Looking for something a little different from a traditional restaurant?
Gozo Picnic offers a unique gourmet picnic experience that reconnects you with the island’s spectacular natural beauty. Everything is freshly prepared using quality local ingredients and beautifully arranged for you.
You can request a specific location or let the team recommend one of Gozo’s most magical hidden spots for an unforgettable romantic experience.
We particularly love the cosy little corner at the end of the terrace, but the island is full of stunning locations where you can enjoy an intimate moment together surrounded by nature.
