Please note that some restaurants only open during the winter season, especially the ice restaurants, while others operate with reduced opening hours. We therefore strongly recommend checking opening dates and making reservations well in advance.
Gustav Kitchen & Bar
We begin our selection of romantic restaurants in Rovaniemi with Gustav Kitchen & Bar. Located just outside the city centre, it is only a short walk from the Arktikum Science Centre, one of the best places to admire and photograph the Northern Lights without needing a car after your dinner.
The restaurant serves a creative cuisine combining traditional Swedish and Finnish recipes, including salmon trout, alongside international flavours.
The menu also tells the story behind each dish, with Chef Gustav sharing how his travels inspired his recipes. For example, his signature salmon trout combines Nordic ingredients with Japanese influences such as papaya and Som Tam sauce.
Restaurant Nili
The Nili Restaurant is, in our opinion, one of the very best restaurants in central Rovaniemi. You would be hard-pressed to find a venue that better represents traditional Finnish cuisine and décor.
The menu includes a few European dishes, but its real focus is authentic Lappish specialities. Among them you’ll find bear meat, one of the restaurant’s signature dishes, alongside reindeer, an essential Lappish delicacy that we highly recommend trying.
Make sure you book well in advance, as this restaurant is extremely popular. After around 5:00–5:30 pm, finding an available table becomes very unlikely. Dinner service begins as early as 4:00 pm, following Finnish dining habits.

Ravintola Monte Rosa
Monte Rosa is located right in the heart of Rovaniemi city centre, just a few minutes’ walk from the beautiful Kemijoki River, which flows through Lapland like a natural frontier towards the Arctic.
The décor is wonderfully authentic, with exposed stone walls, candlelit tables, leather armchairs and a magnificent fireplace. The dining rooms are peaceful and intimate, creating a warm and cosy atmosphere.
The menu showcases Finnish specialities, including reindeer prepared in three different ways: carpaccio, grilled steak and slow-cooked over several hours at low temperature. It’s one of the best places to discover this iconic Lappish meat.
The restaurant is open Monday to Friday for lunch from 11:00 am to 1:30 pm, and Tuesday to Saturday from 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm. It is closed on Sundays, Saturday lunchtime and Monday evenings.
Arctic Restaurant
In our opinion—and judging by its guests’ reviews, Arctic Restaurant deserves at least a mention in the Michelin Guide. Located in the city centre, it offers fine dining of outstanding quality.
The décor alone is worth the visit. In the evening, the covered terrace is illuminated with elegant fairy lights while the softly lit dining rooms create a sophisticated and romantic ambience.
Every dish is beautifully presented, colourful and refined. The reindeer tartare is one of the restaurant’s signature specialities and offers a wonderfully original way to enjoy this tender local meat.
Reservations are highly recommended, especially for dinner.
The next three restaurants in our selection are located in Santa Claus Village, which should not be confused with SantaPark, a separate paid theme park located elsewhere.
Santa’s Salmon Place
For the second part of our selection, we’ve chosen a few hidden gems located right inside Santa Claus Village.
Santa’s Salmon Place is not a conventional restaurant but rather a large wooden hut with a central open fire where salmon fillets are grilled right in front of you. It’s an incredibly original concept that feels both intimate and wonderfully authentic.
Of course, if several coachloads of tourists arrive at once, some of the romance inevitably disappears. However, outside peak periods, it is a delightful place for an early lunch or dinner.
The restaurant is open every day from 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm, so late dinners are not possible. However, you’ll still have plenty of time to enjoy Santa Claus Village before catching the last bus back to Rovaniemi city centre at 7:35 pm.

Kotahovi Restaurant
Also located in Santa Claus Village, Kotahovi Restaurant is designed like a traditional Lappish hut with a large central fireplace. Interestingly, the family who owns the restaurant has been raising reindeer since the 19th century.
The restaurant recreates the atmosphere of a traditional Sámi kota, with its open fire, timber interior and reindeer hides creating a cosy and welcoming setting.
The menu focuses on classic Lappish cuisine, including mushroom soup, salmon soup, several different reindeer dishes and, naturally, delicious desserts featuring local Arctic berries.
Restaurant Gallis
Restaurant Gallis is located within the Glass Resort at Santa Claus Village. Like many restaurants in Rovaniemi, it is a seasonal winter restaurant, generally open from early October until the end of April.
Its location allows you to enjoy an elegant dinner while surrounded by the magical atmosphere of Christmas and the snowy landscapes of Lapland.
Main courses range from approximately €29 to €47, but the à la carte menu also includes several sharing dishes that provide a more affordable option.
The atmosphere is peaceful, refined and elegant, while the attentive yet discreet service makes it an excellent choice for a romantic dinner for two.
Sky Kitchen and View
For many years, Sky Kitchen & View was considered one of the finest restaurants in Finland.
Perched on top of Ounasvaara Hill, it combines refined gastronomy with spectacular panoramic views over Rovaniemi. Wood and stone dominate the interior, while a magnificent fireplace adds warmth and character to the dining room.
Treat yourselves to one of the surprise tasting menus, available in either three or five courses from around €70. If you prefer something lighter, you can share a traditional Lappish platter featuring several local specialities before enjoying homemade bouillabaisse or reindeer prepared in two different ways. A more affordable alternative is the restaurant’s famous Sky Burger, made with a blend of beef and reindeer.
Even if you don’t dine here, the rooftop terrace is a wonderful place to enjoy an aperitif while watching the sunset.
Ice Restaurant
Our first ice restaurant is located inside the Arctic SnowHotel, around 30 minutes north-west of Rovaniemi city centre.
It is open from mid-December until the end of March and serves dinner at three fixed sittings between 5:30 pm and 8:30 pm.
You’ll enjoy a three-course menu served on plates carved from ice. A typical meal begins with wild mushroom soup, followed by your choice of one of four main courses (two meat and two fish options), before finishing with a dessert featuring local wild berries. Expect to pay around €80 per adult for this truly unforgettable Arctic dining experience.
Snowland Igloo Restaurant
Celebrating over 30 years, Snowland Igloo Restaurant is located approximately 2.5 km from Rovaniemi city centre. A bus towards Ranua stops around 750 metres away. Bear in mind that buses only run approximately every 90 minutes, so be sure to check the return timetable before setting off.
The restaurant forms part of the Snowland Snow Experience, one of Rovaniemi’s winter attractions. It offers a unique opportunity to enjoy a meal inside a building made entirely of snow and ice.
The menu, featuring tomato and herb soup followed by beef Stroganoff with mashed potatoes, may not be the most exciting gastronomic experience in our opinion, but tastes differ and everyone will judge for themselves. The venue itself, however, is absolutely spectacular and well worth visiting.
Restaurant Kota à Apukka Resort
Located around 15 minutes from both Rovaniemi and Santa Claus Village, Kota Restaurant is open exclusively during the winter season, generally from mid-November until the end of March.
It is one of the two restaurants at the original Apukka Resort. While the other restaurant is larger and more rustic, Kota offers a much more intimate setting with fewer tables. We highly recommend booking in advance and requesting one of the tables positioned along the walls for greater privacy.
With its central fireplace, limited number of tables and traditional tipi-inspired architecture, the restaurant immediately creates a warm and romantic atmosphere.
Two menus are available: one showcasing traditional Lappish cuisine with salmon, reindeer and other regional specialities, and a fully vegetarian alternative.
Rakas Restaurant & Bar
Located not far from Apukka Resort on the road towards the airport, Rakas Restaurant & Bar requires a little extra effort to reach without a car. Several buses from Rovaniemi stop around 750 to 900 metres away, after which you’ll enjoy a pleasant walk away from the main road.
Its elegant Scandinavian design combines natural wood, fireplaces and contemporary Nordic décor. The layout creates an intimate atmosphere, making it an excellent choice for a romantic dinner.
The menu naturally includes fresh salmon, but also reindeer, traditional stews and even elk burgers—certainly not something you’ll find every day. Local Arctic berries feature prominently in the desserts. Adventurous food lovers should definitely opt for the surprise tasting menu.
With its modern interpretation of Lappish cuisine and peaceful natural surroundings, Rakas Restaurant & Bar is a wonderful destination for a romantic evening. Although it lies slightly outside the city centre, the journey is more than worthwhile for its unique atmosphere and outstanding cuisine.
