Bistrot le Stanze
This trendy cocktail bar and restaurant occupies one of the most unique historical settings in Bologna. Housed inside the former 16th-century private chapel of the Bentivoglio family, its magnificent Renaissance architecture makes it one of the city’s most remarkable venues.
It’s included in our selection primarily because of its extraordinary setting rather than its food. The place is absolutely stunning.
We recommend coming here for a coffee, aperitivo or cocktails in spectacular surroundings rather than for a romantic dinner, as the food unfortunately no longer lives up to the exceptional venue.
Arrive early if you want a table in the beautiful back room. Drinks are accompanied by complimentary tapas and crisps, while charcuterie boards, cheeses and bruschetta are also available to enjoy with your aperitif.
Il Portico di San Donato
A charming romantic restaurant located beneath Bologna’s iconic porticoes. Jokes aside, there’s something undeniably special about enjoying lunch or dinner under the city’s famous covered walkways.
Situated just 700 metres from the Poggi Museum, it’s an ideal lunch stop after your visit or a peaceful dinner destination away from the busiest streets of the historic centre.
Did you know Bologna boasts over 40 kilometres of porticoes? That total even includes the spectacular covered walkway leading to the Sanctuary of San Luca.
The menu features an excellent selection of pizzas—more than twenty varieties between the regular menu and daily specials—all prepared with thin, crispy bases and generous toppings. You’ll also find pasta dishes and Italian cured meats. After all, no trip to Italy is complete without enjoying a great pizza!
The Gallery Pizzart
This gourmet pizzeria offers something refreshingly different from the ordinary.
Stylish and artistic, it serves delicious traditional pizzas alongside inventive gourmet creations in a cosy setting with attentive service. You’ll feel wonderfully pampered, especially during the cooler months when the fireplace adds to the intimate atmosphere.
Evenings are peaceful, with soft music and warm lighting, while in summer the charming courtyard decorated with artwork provides an equally delightful setting.
Most pizzas are reasonably priced, although the Deluxe creations are more luxurious, topped with ingredients such as Pata Negra ham and white truffle or Sicilian Mazara red prawns with pistachio cream.
Affumico
This restaurant and wine bar offers a truly unique concept centred around the traditional art of food smoking.
The professional smoking equipment is imported from abroad because it simply isn’t available in Italy. Smoked meats and fish are vacuum-packed before being incorporated into the restaurant’s dishes or sold separately for customers to enjoy at home.
The menu includes dishes to enjoy in-house, takeaway meals, delivery options and excellent gourmet sandwiches served on large rustic wooden boards.
We particularly love the stylish industrial décor.
Sette Tavoli
Located just southeast of the Quadrilatero district, this welcoming restaurant extends beneath Bologna’s beautiful arcades whenever the weather allows.
It’s still centrally located, yet pleasantly removed from the busiest tourist crowds.
Enjoy the feeling of dining like a local while savouring beautifully presented homemade seasonal dishes beneath Bologna’s legendary romantic porticoes.
Osteria Le Moline
Just a short stroll from the famous Finestrella, you could begin with a cocktail at Bambu before heading here if you’re not in the mood for Japanese cuisine.
House specialties include Sardinian cheese and charcuterie platters along with freshly made artisan pasta.
The cosy interior is full of character, although we especially recommend the more intimate upstairs seating area.
The generous charcuterie boards, beautifully presented on wooden serving platters, are incredibly tempting, while the homemade pasta selection is equally impressive.
Ristorante Enoteca da Lucia
Located in the very heart of Bologna, Ristorante Enoteca da Lucia serves refined cuisine of exceptional quality.
Everything, from the fresh ingredients to the elegant presentation, is beautifully executed, and each colourful dish is as delicious as it looks.
Highlights include Angus beef tartare, octopus served with hummus and crispy bacon, and perfectly cooked duck breast.
The elegant and peaceful atmosphere makes this an excellent choice for a romantic evening full of wonderful flavours.
I Carracci
One of Bologna’s most iconic restaurants, I Carracci is housed within the city’s oldest luxury hotel, the Majestic Hotel.
Its magnificent ceiling frescoes rival those of the nearby Portici restaurant. The celebrated Fall of Phaeton frescoes were painted by the Carracci School, founded by the famous artistic family in 1582.
We also love the enchanting outdoor terrace, decorated with lanterns and candles—an idyllic setting for a romantic candlelit dinner.
Two tasting menus are available Monday to Saturday: one celebrating land-based cuisine and another focusing on seafood, both priced at €120. A traditional tasting menu (€95) is served at lunchtime Monday to Saturday and on Sunday evening, while an à la carte menu is also available.
Ristorante Sotto l’Arco
Have you ever had a dish arrive at your table that immediately made you say “wow”? That’s exactly the kind of experience this restaurant delivers.
Each plate is a miniature work of art, beautifully arranged with flowers, creative presentations, eggs served in their original cartons, and even playful fusion dishes featuring pipettes for adding sauces yourself.
For the full experience, choose the chef’s seven-course Girogiocando tasting menu (€85). If you’re visiting on a Thursday lunchtime and book in advance, the excellent tourist menu is available for the whole table at just €40 per person.

Ristorante Portici
Awarded one Michelin star, Ristorante Portici serves refined contemporary cuisine in surroundings worthy of an Italian palace.
Dinner is served inside the magnificent Eden Theatre, a beautifully restored café-theatre dating back to 1899, where elegant Liberty-style frescoes were uncovered during restoration.
Guests can choose between five- or seven-course tasting menus starting from €110 (excluding wine pairing). The wine list proudly showcases Italian wines from Emilia-Romagna alongside outstanding selections from France, Germany, Spain and beyond.
The restaurant’s talented young chef, Nicola, took over in January 2023. Remarkably, he earned his very first Michelin star at another restaurant when he was only 25 years old.
