TREAT YOURSELF TO A ROMANTIC DINNER IN MALMÖ
Malmö’s dining scene beautifully blends Swedish traditions with contemporary gastronomy. Whether you’re looking for an intimate candlelit dinner in a historic setting or eager to sample local Scandinavian flavours in charming surroundings, the city offers plenty of memorable options. Rich in culinary heritage yet refreshingly creative, Malmö is the perfect destination for a romantic meal. To make choosing easier, we’ve handpicked the city’s most romantic restaurants, with options for every budget.
Bistro Royal
We begin our selection with one of Malmö’s most remarkable dining venues. Its story dates back to the 19th century, when King Oscar II of Sweden inaugurated what originally served as the Royal Waiting Hall between 1876 and 1890.
You’ll immediately fall in love with the magnificent painted ceilings, ornate mouldings and beautifully carved wooden panels.
The soft lighting creates an intimate atmosphere, while the generously spaced tables ensure plenty of privacy for couples.
The menu focuses on refined European cuisine with strong French influences, while still celebrating Scandinavian traditions.
San Greal
Hidden away on historic St. Gertrud’s Square, just a short stroll from Drottningtorget, San Greal is a true haven for champagne lovers.
The cosy atmosphere feels more like an elegant living room than a restaurant, while the friendly staff make you feel instantly at home.
Although the champagne list isn’t extensive, it’s carefully curated with bottles from independent growers, offering excellent choices for both newcomers and enthusiasts. Glasses and bottles are available at very reasonable prices.
The food menu has been specially designed to complement the champagne selection, featuring delicious small plates and sharing dishes.
We especially loved the cosy décor, with exposed wooden beams and velvet armchairs. Outside, the charming terrace is equipped with warm fur blankets, making it perfect even on cooler days.
Karl-Mikael
Karl-Mikael sits right in the heart of Malmö’s historic centre, just steps from the city’s modern design museum and many of its main attractions.
Inside, warm colours and elegant Scandinavian furnishings create a beautifully authentic Swedish atmosphere.
The dishes are generous, artistic and beautifully presented. We particularly loved the delicate flower-shaped pancakes, while the desserts are true works of art—even if you don’t usually have a sweet tooth.
Do note that opening hours are limited, with service only from Wednesday to Saturday, 6 pm to 11 pm.
Bloom in the Park
Located inside the beautiful Pildammsparken, Bloom in the Park is another Michelin-starred restaurant offering an unforgettable dining experience.
Chef Titti Qvarnström, one of Scandinavia’s first female Michelin-starred chefs, creates an ever-changing surprise tasting menu with no fixed dishes. Every course is designed to delight and surprise.
Whether dining indoors or on the elegant terrace overlooking the park, the sophisticated surroundings create an exceptionally romantic setting.
Atmosfär
Welcome to Atmosfär, a cosy restaurant offering relaxed elegance in the heart of Malmö.
It’s located in the historic centre, just a short walk from the city’s picturesque waterfront and several beautiful parks.
The kitchen focuses on modern Swedish cuisine prepared with premium local ingredients. Large windows overlook the lively street outside, while candlelight and warm décor create a wonderfully intimate atmosphere.
Recommended by the Michelin Guide, Atmosfär is known for its refined yet generous dishes, beautifully presented and full of flavour.
MJ's
Located in central Malmö, just moments from several museums and historic churches, MJ’s is both a boutique hotel and an outstanding restaurant.
Its lush indoor garden, sparkling fairy lights and stylish interiors provide a unique romantic setting.
The inventive international menu changes between lunch and dinner, offering meat, fish and vegetarian options to suit every taste.
Couples can also choose sharing dishes, including an excellent platter for two priced at around €43.
A romantic dinner here is perfectly followed by an evening stroll through Malmö’s charming city centre.
Friis14
Situated on the corner of Friisgatan in southern central Malmö, Friis14 is a welcoming neighbourhood bistro run by the cheerful couple Ylva and José.
The restaurant reflects their Swedish, French and Chilean influences through a menu featuring perfectly executed classics, each with its own distinctive twist.
Expect dishes such as steak frites, steak tartare, baba au rhum, seasonal specials, delicious Scanian apple cake and an outstanding ceviche inspired by Chef José’s Chilean roots.
Ylva’s thoughtfully selected wine list pairs beautifully with every dish.
Friendly service, generous portions and a cosy atmosphere make every visit memorable.
Kockeriet
Kockeriet is a superb restaurant located in Malmö’s historic centre, close to the canal surrounding the Old Town.
Mentioned in the Michelin Guide, it’s owned by renowned Swedish chef Tareq Taylor, who was born in Malmö. The restaurant occupies a beautifully restored 17th-century grain warehouse that has retained all its historic charm.
The cuisine combines Swedish, Scandinavian and wider European influences to create elegant gastronomic dishes presented with exceptional care.
Some ingredients even come directly from the restaurant’s own vegetable garden, adding incredible freshness to every plate.
The restaurant is open for dinner only, Monday to Saturday, from 6 pm to 11 pm.
Artiderna I Kochska
Dating back to 1523, Årstiderna i Kockska Huset occupies one of Malmö’s oldest historic buildings, which has evolved over the centuries into one of the city’s finest restaurants.
Located in the heart of the Old Town, it’s within easy walking distance of the canal, museums and historic churches.
We absolutely fell in love with the vaulted dining room, romantic atmosphere and beautiful stone arches, creating one of the most intimate settings in Malmö.
The menu includes traditional Swedish cuisine, seasonal menus, festive menus for special occasions such as Christmas and Mother’s Day, as well as an à la carte selection.
Be sure to check the restaurant’s website before booking, as some tasting menus require advance reservations or minimum party sizes.
Vollmers
We finish our selection with one of Malmö’s finest culinary experiences.
Located in the heart of the Old Town, Vollmers belongs to the exclusive club of two Michelin-starred restaurants, thanks to the outstanding creativity and technical mastery of its chefs.
Rather than offering an à la carte menu, the restaurant serves a single tasting menu showcasing the very best ingredients sourced exclusively from Scania, the southern region of Sweden where Malmö is located.
Each course is beautifully presented like a work of art and served in a minimalist yet elegant dining room that allows the cuisine to take centre stage.
For couples seeking an unforgettable gastronomic experience, this is undoubtedly one of Malmö’s finest addresses.
